Making games for Disabled gamers

Over 20% of gamers have issues that prevent them from fully enjoying the current and best games. Gamer disabilitys can range from deafness to partial blindness to any other number of issues that disabled and handicapped gamers need to deal with. Finally the game industry has taken note of these issues and established guidelines for programmers to use in their games to allow everybody , irrespective of their physical condition to enjoy games.

www.gameaccessibilityguidelines.com has been created by a group of developers and experts, coordinated by Ian Hamilton, an accessibility and usability specialist with a background in game development.

The website gives  developers guidelines on the simple changes that games need to have to make them more accessible for  gamers with a range of visual, hearing, speech, learning and motor conditions.

How many gamers have an impairment?
Recent research by PopCapshowed that as many as 20% of gamers are disabled.  Often there are simple solutions such as combining colours with symbols, or allowing text to disappear on a button press rather than a timer. Many of these practices have already been implemented in the game industry in recent years. Now skippable cut scenes are a standard, and configurable controls almost a must (to the relief of many a left handed gamer)

This creation has taken Ian Hamilton six months , his main motivation has been to do something about the number of studios who unwittingly ignore the needs of players through a lack of knowledge about the barriers disabled gamers face when trying to play their favourite games.
“The guidelines started really a few years ago as a personal project triggered by work I did whilst at the BBC, which included creating games and products for disabled children. That expanded into advising internal teams and 3rd party game studios on game accessibility, which made me realise firstly to what degree gamers were unnecessarily being shut out by the games industry through lack of awareness, and secondly the huge value that games have: it’s not just about delivering access, it’s about entertainment, culture, socialising, the very things that are the difference between existing and living. Gaming really does have a huge impact on people’s lives,” said Ian.
These are some of the big names in gaming that helped Ian Hamilton with the accessibility project:  Blitz games studios, Headstrong Games, Aardman Digital, OneSwitch and Stockholm University.
“Through the process we’ve spoken to developers around the world, from small indies to large triple-A studios, and the support has been fantastic. There are already several games in development that are using the guidelines to deliver the best possible experience to as many people as possible.”
One of the developers that the guidelines have already helped is Poland-basedVivid Games, who sought Ian’s help when creating a PC version of its recent mobile and PS3 game, Speedball 2: evolution.
“When we were developing the mobile version of Speedball 2 we included a special mode for colour blind gamers, which changed the palette and increased the contrast to ensure that all the on-screen action was still visible.” said Remi Koscielny, President of Vivid Games. “For the PC version we wanted to increase the accessibility of the game, so we worked closely with Ian to ensure that every part of the game was optimised for impaired gamers. Having learnt what a major difference can be made to so many people with just a little extra effort, we certainly hope that all developers take on board the fantastic work that Ian has done.”
www.gameaccessibilityguidelines.com is an open and free resource for anyone involved in the games industry around the world to use. It will continue to evolve, and feedback from developers is welcomed via the website.

How to use Google Play Gift Cards

How to use Google Play Gift Cards
Apple has been very successful with their gift card schemes for iTunes and now Google Play has followed suit and has a gift card that can be used for all Android owners.
Who can use the Google Play Gift Card
Our research seems to show that the Android Gift Card is only available in the USA at the moment as the only retailers stocking this Android voucher are Radioshack, Target and Gameshack. They will also be available through Walmart .com later on

When will the Google Play Gift Card be available to the rest of the World?
As of yet there's no word on when they will be ready to roll out to the rest of the world-many of whom are still crying out to download music from Google Play

Gift Cards are not available in your location.

Can you use Google Play Cards outside the USA? Mr. Android says "NO!"

What price are the Google Play Gift Cards?
At the moment the Android lovers pseudo credit card is being sold in $10, $25 and $50 card sizes. The larger sized vouchers could of course buy you a lot of apps and games-but will probably mainly be aimed at videophiles who love the fact that they can watch so many great (but kinda pricy) movies on their Android devices.

What can you buy with the Google Play Gift Card?
Songs, movies,Tv Shows , e-books and of course apps and games can be bought with the cards. At the moment the cards can not be used for app subscriptions, magazine subscriptions, hardware or accessories.
Is there a limit on your credit amount on Google Play
All research that we've done at the moment indicate that the most money that you can have available to you in Google credit is $2000, that's right only a 2000 dollar balance.
Are the Play Gift Cards easy to use?
Yes, simply so-just sign in to your Google Account to redeem your gift code ( and I'm sure it will be only a matter of time before the web is swamped with sites offering Free Google Play voucher codes and free Android credit redeems)

How to find app sales on Google Play

How to find the cheapest Android apps on Google Play
Google Play is currently straining under all the downloads from its Labour Day app sales and end of Summer Android App Sales.
But how exactly do you find apps on sale on Google Play?

Well firstly research is key, now it could be intensive research that involves you knowing which sites to search and when to search, but is the effort involved for a discounted 99c app really worth it?

To find last minute app sales, both obscure indie apps on sale and Blockbuster Android games on sale (and-gasp-for free) you could turn to established app and game websites like ourselves too. But us app journalists are only human too and can miss out on lots of cut price apps and games too.

You could even turn to comparison sites and apps( notice our widget-that could get you the cheap apps you want).

And finally one of the best ways we've found of getting the best app prices is by a timely Google Play search:
When is the best time to search Google Play for App Sales?
There are two time scales involved here, weekly and seasonal Google Play sales. Weekly sales are frequent and big companies like EA and Gameloft are infamous for having apps on sale almost every other weekend (this applies to both Android and iOS games). Remember that a lot of the bigger app studios operate out of the States so what is Midday Friday for you might only be 2 in the morning on a Friday in the USA- generally by 1800 PST most weekend app sales are announced.
Seasonal App Sales
Seasonal sales are a whole different kettle of fish though. These are holiday time specials on the Appstore that publishers magnanimously decide to heavily discount. So all the big festivals are in there: Halloween, Christmas etc. Perhaps the publishers have the idea that a holiday means more me time with your phone or tablet and act accordingly. Now again you've got to think interculturally about these things, and as it stands at the moment Google Play is very heavily Western orientated towards Western cultural phenomenons, so you might not necessarily find a Pesach sale going down, but Thanksgiving and others are certainly times to heat up your Android devices for some cut price apps and games.
A case in point though is if you;re coming to the end of a season-Winter for example and you type in App Winter Sale-then remember your hemispheres Winter might be USA's summer-it's all about the big 'ol USA here I'm afraid.
How to search for Apps on sale on Google Play
Google Play:
Summer Sale
Great info Gametrender, thank you very much for telling us when an app might be on sale, but how do we find the darned things I hear you say? Very simple, app and game lovers, try a search like this: Just type "end of summer sale" into Google Play's search bar and up will come all those apps and games that are showing that seasonal love, so for example Summer 2012 Google Play Apps on Sale include:
Vignette, Modern Combat 3,Sonic CD,Virtua Tennis Challenge,NOVA 3,Star Armada, Dynamite Fishing Premium, Square Enix's Crystal Defenders and more.

So a great time for discounted apps and games, so stop reading about them and go off and search for the best Google Play has to offer.

Math for the Brain: Initial App Testing

Math for the brain. Refresh those memories and arithmetic skills with this brain teaser of an app. It starts off with elementary level math but soon gets more challenging. Finish off minute runs to accumulate points. The points from minute runs get added to a total count that will determines your maximum lebel of challenges that you do. So far it's looking a lot of fun ,but also an app to improve your SAT scores. I will further test this app and update this article. Math, division, addition, subtraction, and exponents are fair game so far.
After further testing here's some more conclusive ideas about Math for the Brain:
I like how the apps brings back a certain nostalgic feeling of the young schooling days. The only problem so far is that after a minutes play;it doesnt have a button to return to the menu to make your choices. I returned to the main menu by pressing the default return button on my phone. The user interface is smooth and has good sound effects and background music. Beeing able to see the time run down keeps your adrenalin pumping to the finish .The minute runs and challenges give the app variety to avoid repetitiveness and boredom(slick).
Also, having short matches doesnt require a long attention span like a lecture does in a classroom. The short bursts of fun and test of intelligence may help get those neurones firing again while helping you achieve a sense of accomplishment.
