Do You Need College to Be a Game Designer?

The gaming industry is booming and has been for many years— what’s more, it doesn’t look like it will be slowing down for quite sometime. Thanks to this boom, the industry is set to gross more than $2.14 trillion according to research in the entertainment market. This includes the surge in online gaming, taking the form of social gaming as well as pay-to-play massively multiplayer gaming and free-to-play games.

For people looking to get into the game design industry, there are a multitude of avenues into the field. From coming up with your own revamp of an already-established game to gaining a degree in computer programming, you can easily dedicate your time to learning a specialty skillset that will be sought by gaming companies and startups. But the question comes down to this: do you need college to get into game design? And if not, how should you make your way into the industry?
Enrolling in a College Program: Some Benefits and Drawbacks
If you are considering a college program in game design, there is a range of benefits to receiving a degree. College programs will not only allow you to study the industry in-depth and learn about the potential projections for the gaming market, but it will also provide you with an established network of like-minded individuals and people within the field. Plus, if you want to hone a certain specialty, like animation, you can attend a specific animation school in the U.S. that’s program will be designed to give you all of the skills you need to become an expert.
Getting a degree in game design will ultimately only help your chances at finding an employer down the line. However, one drawback to attending a college program is that it is obviously costly, and it may not be worth the investment. Also, it is a huge time commitment, as most programs will take four years to complete that you could otherwise be getting right into the industry on your own volition.
Teaching Yourself How to Be a Top-Rated Game Designer
Enrolling in a college program may not be everyone’s best idea into game design, and if you are someone who does not want to go the degree route, you can also teach yourself the needed skills.
One of the most appealing benefits of teaching yourself how to be a game designer is that you can give all of your attention to one element of the industry. If you are interested in exploring next gen entertainment, you can devote your time to learning everything about that particular aspect and master it.
If you decide to make your own way into the industry without college, it is essential to develop your design portfolio to its most impressive capacity. It may be worthwhile, too, to research different certificates in game design that can enhance your skillset and give you certain professional qualifications. With an expert skillset and an remarkable portfolio, you can still manage to impress potential employers and launch your own career path.

Knowing the differences in these two career paths, you can determine whether it makes more sense for you to enroll in a college program or teach yourself the needed skills to get into game design.

Town Hall 11 : Clash of Clans, Clashcon Update

Clashcon has just confirmed the slightly badly kept secret that Town Hall 11 is coming in possibly the next Clash of Clans update. News has also dropped of the new Clash of Clans defence. Kudos to the game designers for some sweet graphics on both the new Town Hall and eagle headed defence.

Clashcon confirms Town Hall 11
But what is the big game changing announcement that ClashCon is bringing today. Is it the new Town Hall, probably not as that only really affects about ten percent of the Clash gaming community. I'm pumping for daily rewards and quests, all will be revealed soon!
Btw don't be tempted to upgrade to the new town hall just yet, I upgraded to level 10 way sooner than I should have and it has really caused much havoc with my playing as battle rewards are linked to your and your opponents respective THall levels. Clash on Finland!

As of today Twitch has a serious rival in the form of Youtube gaming. While vanilla Youtube of course has a preponderance of gaming related materia the dedicated livestreaming app that is YOUTUBE GAMING takes serious gamestreaming to the next level.

With the might of Google behind it the app is sure to take off and bring even more stars into the streaming fold. One of the notable features is the ability to rewind a live stream with a 4 hour buffer, a feature that rivals don't have.

Will the PewDiePies and StampyCat's of the workd embrace the new format? Undoubtedly! We'll bring a full featured review of Youtube Gaming and some of the best luve streams in a follow up article.

Supporting AAA games with great apps

Our first article after a long while covers some of the ins and outs of second screen apps and companion apps aimed at console gamers.

So why the long wait between articles, well Gametrender has taken a massive sabbatical to start eating into the enormous backlog of current (next?) gen gaming in PS4. After lengthy forays into the Witcher 3, the Elder Scrolls Online, a smattering of Battlefield 4 , some Far Cry 4 goodness (amongst others), I've finally dragged myself away from the console to contemplate how AAA high budget gaming and App gaming can live together.

A good example is the second screen capabilities such as Xbox Glass and the Playstation Companion App, with the support  of the likes of Sony these apps go a long way to enabling interconnectivity and feeding/nurturing a gaming habit. Looking particularly at the Playstation Companion app,the big takeaway is that if you're going to support your game with an app ready access to a good API is crucial. Without the ability to link to your Playstation Id , see what friends are doing and track your achievements the app would be nigh useless.

It's almost de rigeur for this type of companion app to accompany a big release, some notable examples are the Destiny App allowing a lot of the lore to be examined (crucial in the story void that Bungie has encouraged), weapon swapping and raid info also makes things easier. Battlefield Commander also brings a different take to the companion app scene.

From a developer perspective , aside from the small question of the legal perspective and gaining access to an app's data/api; creating an app to support an already established IP is a no brainer. The publicity and user base is already there, so if the actual dev is not going to support with a good app then why shouldn't you? If you've got your own best game companion app then please share in the comments.

CamScanner: It's all fun and games until...

Until you have to get to work. Or simply need a quick scan of a doc for serious, legitimate reasons.

That's when CamScanner steps in. Why not simply take a photo? Well, CamScanner has a few additional tricks up its sleeve. It will modify the image so the document appears centered and flat, with legible texts.

For a monthly fees, you even have access to a decent OCR software, that is, get your picture into a .txt document with easily modified text.

One recommendation though: photograph your document against a contrasting background to help CamScanner do its job!

While nothing revolutionary, this is a very useful app for iTunes and Android. you can even learn more on their website: https://www.camscanner.com/

Clash of Clans December 2014 Christmas Update

Supercell has given us another early Christmas present in the form of their now expected annual Christmas Clash of Clans update. There are a few changes, and of course the normal Christmas 2014 winterising of the Village ,with the usual snow and gem bearing gift trees.

What is in the 2014 Clash of Clans Christmas Update?
Most significantly the Giant has now been capped to level 7! I've been finding him underpowered for a while so we'll see how the new half gold armoured level 7 Clash giant fares. When I've got a spare 7 million elixer to upgrade him that is...
And what better way to get that elixir than by a new max gold and elixir collector level. That's right if your Clash of Clan's addiction has become costly now you'll be able to farm more quickly with a raised collector cap. And for a very cheap upgrade price too. A mere 336 thousand gold or elixir nets you a fully upgraded collector(if they were max level already of course). This part of the Holiday Clash of Clans update is most welcome and should grease the wheels of war at a much better rate. You can also look forward to updated archer towers which halve their damage but double their capacity allowing targetting of much bigger enemy swarms. Now while you're waiting around sharpenning your lap steel you can also admire your villages destruction while it happens! But also look forward to many more ways to plan your village with an enhanced draft village layout tool.Have a Clashtastic Christmas.

Rescue Quest: an awkward interface ruins a pleasant game.

Rescue Quest has good, solid bases: a "match-3" system with adequate power-ups and limited turns. The gimmick of tracing a path for the hero uses a well-known mechanic: match jewels (or here, tokens) on top of certain parts of the play area to clear them of obstacles. The graphics are pretty, very colourful and generally unobtrusive. The music is decent. It is a fun, free game to play on iOS...

... except for the lay-out of the play area. To give more room for maze-like levels, which admittedly fits with the whole "clear a path" storyline, the player don't get a full-view of the level but has to swipe around to access other parts of the level. Which can lead to involuntary swipes of tokens and such of a lost turn. You can access a sort of mini-map, but that seems like too many superfluous actions for something we should be able to see right away.

Especially in a market saturated with good match-3 games, pass on Rescue Quest.

Criminal Case, a pretty simply good Hidden Object mobile game

Criminal Case is a good Hidden Object game. How good you ask? It was voted the Best Facebook Game of 2013, before Candy Crush.

Since last August, Criminal Case can be enjoyed on the go, at least on iOS; a Android release is planned for January 2015.

So, what is a "Hidden Object Game"? A HOG has nothing to do with porcines and all to do with observation, keen eyesight and memory. Criminal Case follows the classic formula: a series of tableaus stock-full of small details is presented to the player and some of those details, as listed in game, have to be clicked.

Criminal Case also includes some alternate forms of gameplay, like "Spot the differences", puzzles, and timed attack stages. In-between observing crime scenes, the player has to wait for the lab's results on clues they found at those scenes or by sifting through miscellaneous items.

Nothing revolutionary, but all very well assembled, so it is a breeze to grasp and play. If you're a fan of HOG, don't pass up Criminal Case.

Rayman Fiesta Run: Good ol' plateformer fun on mobile

Rayman may not be as iconic as Mario, but for people of my generation, he still has a special place in our hearts. With a triumphant return with Rayman Legends, maybe he'll become the same for a new generation.

One of the best part of Legends are the "runner" stages: character on auto-pilot, one or two buttons to react and jump over obstacles, great music. Nothing new if you're a fan of Bit.Trip.Runner, but still nice.

Now, you can have that fun in bite-sized format. Rayman Fiesta Run for iOS or Android add the abilities to hover for a few seconds and to wall jump, adding depth to the runner genre. Speaking of which, be sure to go for the Fiesta Run. Rayman Jungle Run (for iOS or Android) is very similar in essence, but the graphics and more importantly the level design is far inferior.

Last caveat, this is not really a game to play on the go, in a crowded bus or whatever. But to get your old school gaming fix without having to turn off a heavier console, or to introduce a kid to one of your childhood hero? Perfect!

Destiny game levelling Cheat

If youve been playing Destiny you'll be wanting to level up asap to gain the covetted 20 plus level, where the game really opens up. The "Destiny Cave Cheat" is one quick way to go about this. After a bit of Reddit and gaming forum searching i found some of the easiest ways to locate the Destiny Cave, an hou of play saw a dozen new lvel plus weapons and a quick xp gain to jump from 9 to 11.
Initially a little hard to find Destiny's cheat cave normally has a few people hanging around outside for the easy grind.
Head to the Skywatch area of Old Russia. If you can't remember how to get there, head for the massive building on the hill. Go through it until you emerge out the other side. Skywatch is the area with the crashed hive ship where the hive and fallen fight each other.

Once in the Skywatch, turn left and follow the cliff until you hit a building with a little door in it. Don't enter the building, but turn right and head towards the hive ship. If you look ACROSS the ship's entrance, you'll see a little cave.

As long as you (or someone else) doesn't get too close, the cave will spawn an almost continuous stream of low-level thralls and acolytes.

Play nice with others and keep the minions spawning, try to share the drops and go to the cave when others do, there's plenty of loot drops so dont worry.
See the attached pictures for reference: Its in the Skywatch area head for the large building referenced in the screenshot and then turn right, also a sure sign is the other grinders normally hanging out there. The trick is to keep the mobs spawning by not getting too close, but the spawn will also stop if the minions mangae to escape the area, so remember to gun them all down. Sometimes Bungie seems to get angry with this easy Destiny XP and engram gain and chucks everything at you. In which case, good luck surviving!

Why getting rid of "isms" from games and discussions about games is important

I've already talked about the so-called "GamerGate". On occasions, I've mentioned the numerous other scandals revolving around the exclusion on "non-gamer", i.e. people who aren't white, straight, male youngsters.

Let's put that behind us. All of those sterile pseudo-debates. When the "discussion" is about standing for social justice or not, that is not a choice.

No, these flame wars and harassment campaigns are only hurting the video game industry.

Let's work our way in from the outside, shall we? For people accusing video games of creating real-life issues of violence, the would-be rapists and killers, as well as the onlookers idling letting the threats happen, are a blessing. These anti-videogame advocates are either confirmed in their beliefs or are gathering ammunitions for future campaigns.

Now, statistics show that more and more people are playing games on their phones, tables, or social media of choice. So how can they fall for the "video games are evil" routine? Simple, they often do not identify as gamers or even just vide game player. And why should they? The "gamer" label has been appropriated by insult-spewing bigots and said bigots are excluding "casual" games from the "true" video games.

As for people with more level heads that consider that "gamer" should only describe someone playing video games, and as such accept the qualificative for themselves... These persons are either reconsidering this acceptance or just walking away, like Phil Fish leaving the game industry. Even more resilient "gamers" lose then, because some interesting voices get muffled.

On the journalism side of things... well, it's a lose-lose situation. You have to cover this, even if the accusations from the sexist are total, utter BS. Since the discussion inevitably shift from the real, possible issues of corruption, or quality of the developer's work, or any deep subject to a shallow, uninteresting pseudo-debate (because this is not really a debate, see above) about whether games include example of sexisms. Which of course they do, because society at large is still shedding the old shell of patriarchy and that involve growing pains; video games are only a small part of a much larger issue, but as gamers or industry veterans, we start with our own backyard.

Of course, the reader of gaming sites also lose. I'm pretty sure you'd rather read, and I know I'd rather write, another simple review to get your gaming fix of the day. Or at least, not have to cycle through the same arguments about the same old questions.

Heck, even people who don't like Depression Quest (since Zoe Quinn is at the centre of this latest debacle, let's use her game as example) see their opinion muffled. As the Escapist explained in two videos about Anita Sarkeesian, all discussions about the quality of her videos have to be tabled to present an united front against the torrent of hate and harassment. The Gamergaters are clamouring for free speech, but they are seriously stiffling it... And the "united front" mentality is a relic from the "censorship Wars" as Bob Chipman put it.

Finally, even the so-called, exclusionary gamer do not benefit from this. If they lose this battle and the next, they eventually be left alone in their very small corner of the universe... but they will lose so much creativity and opportunity. they may lose games altogether, because if it becomes too much of a niche market, it won't be profitable any more... This is especially ironic and tragic when their main fear is that their games will be taken from them if more social justice is introduced in the narrative.

So yeah, I'm tired of always sounding like a broken record. I want to see better thing for the video games. But I'd rather keep repeating myself than let these bigots win this fight. Because if they do, we all lose, even them.

I am a Social Justice Warrior, and proudly so.

There's been yet another debacle in gaming these past few days, the so-called GamerGate. I recommend this article at Badass Digest to get a picture of how ugly the whole thing is.

I won't speak of the moral mire that sprung this torrent of harassment, as the aforementioned article does it very well. Let's shift this to a linguistic point of view.

I'm tired of assholes either using words they do not comprehend or turning laudative expressions into slurs. I'm tired of seeing "gay" used as an insult, of "gamer" becoming synonym of "white, straight, entitled manchild", or of "feminist" painting for most the portrait of a "Straw Feminist".

As several commentators have pointed out, "social justice warrior" sounds like a badass thing to be, a great thing to aspire to. So, no, I won't let this qualificative become something to be ashamed of. I'm proud to want and to act for more social justice in my little corner of the universe.

I am proud of being a Social Justice Warrior. Who's with me?
