Gametrender loves apps and we are pleased to announce our new writer who has joined the App extravaganza that is us, simply because he loves to game and loves Android.
Josh Y was a prolific commentator on our most popular article about the best Xperia Play Games.J's enthusiasm and knowledge of apps and gaming really shone out, to such an extent that some of his comments on the Xperia Play article were worthy of being Gametrender articles in themselves!


Naturally , as we're always on the lookout for new writers who love apps, we invited Josh to join us and are thrilled to have his first article published here, in which Josh interviews Paul Lamb , the genius who improved the Mupen 64 N64 emu for Android so that the Xperia Play could be used to it's best advantage in playing retro games. J's enthusiasm and style really shone out in his article and needless to say his videogame knowledge is second to none.

Save the Moles , Whack a Lawyer with your iPhone instead!

There are some games that touchscreen phones just do so well, and quick action games are one of those games. With quick reactions and a hunger for scoring highly these type of games can quickly become a fulfilling obsession on your Iphone. Of course " Whack A Mole" games are a dime a dozen on iOS so it takes something really fine to make us jaded gamers sit up and take notice. Our latest find is one of these "Whacking Action Games"and is in a good cause too.
A good cause as it's not your average ground burrowing rodent that is being bopped on the head for no reason. No in this particular game the "moles" being whacked are of an altogether more deserving and slippery sort. As this frantic action app sees you " whacking" Lawyers instead! What species of nefarious pest could be more deserving!


The LAWYER WHACKER PRO app is,as expected, of a frantic pace , but employs multiple skill levels so all sorts of gamers can find entertainment and not frustration. Graphics on the retina display and Ipad version are slick and funny, drawn with a great sense of humour. The App sets itself above other " Whack a Mole" apps by having powerups (beware the mighty Gavel!) and good lawyers, who must not be whacked. The app is very score intensive  as you'd expect and integrates social network scoring in a great way, really encouraging you to work on your fast twitch reactions and whack every lawyer you can.

Making a Name for yourself in the App Industry

The App industry is massive and many young guns who love technology and the cutting edge of entertainment try their utmost to get into the booming Smartphone application market.
Of course, as has been the case for a while, Apple and it's coveted Ipads and Iphones lead the way in the app industry. When the Iphone 4S was announced to the world last year the app generation had a new flagship to play with. One of Gametrender's much valued associates was there to see it all and his new book explores a very different way of making it big in the app and technology industry.


Rob Shoesmith has become a near legendary figure in certain technologically and app savvy areas of the UK , his new book shows a dream. Classic Games come to Xperia Play Android Phone

Some games work really well on the Xperia Play thanks to it's unique Android based slide out controller. Now a lot of older games from the Nintendo era , and even original Atari games, if you want to go back that far, weren't reliant on over complicated gaming control schemes. With one or two buttons at a push and a simple joystick many gaming legends were born.
We're pleased to announce that we've got wind of a definite simply controlled game legend that is sure to be another Xperia Play Hit: Boulder Dash has now been optimised for the Xperia Play. Boulder Dash: The Collection has renowned Android Race app developer PolarBit (famed for Reckless Racing) bringing five classic Boulder Dash games to the Playstation Phone. Interview with Paul Lamb about Mupen64 Plus AE (Nintendo 64 Emulator)

    Want to emulate Nintendo 64 on your Android device? Over a million people have already started using Mupen64 Plus emulator Android Edition for their smartphones and tablets. If you're not one of them and you have a new-ish to new Android device and loved the Nintendo 64, then what are you waiting for? Although the N64 emulator for Android is still being improved, lots of work has already gone into making it compatible with Android devices and N64 games. Which games work on this  Android N64 emu, you ask? How about Super Mario 64, Super Smash Brothers, Mario Kart 64 and Starfox 64 on your Android Phone, to name a few?

A few games that work with a little lag is Kirby 64 and Pokemon Stadiums 1 and 2. Not all roms work, and most that do can see a little a lag depending on your device.

The main man behind  bringing the power of Mupen64 Plus to our smartphones is Paul Lamb. I had the opportunity to interview Paul Lamb for my first article as a Gametrender writer.

1.It is an honor to get to interview you sir. Is this your first interview?   
Paul-Yes

2.Have you heard from the Mupen64 Plus developers about their opinion on you and your emulators? 
Paul - I often talk with Richard42 on the Emutalk forum.  He is actively maintaining Mupen64Plus at the moment.  Our communication is generally to ask him questions about how the code works or how to hook various things up.  We have not had a discussion about his opinion of the emulator.  I also communicate with Ari64, who wrote the ARM dynarec I used in Mupen64Plus AE, but those discussions are also to ask technical questions, so I do not know his opinion of the app either.

3.What made you decide on going through the trouble of making the emulator work with the Xperia Play's touchpads when it's just one specific device of many? 
Paul - The initial motivation for making it work with the Xperia Play touchpad was one of the initial testers, Epic_bubble.  He pointed me to the technical documentation and started a thread on the XDA Developers forum to promote the project.  Another motivating factor was a little bit of competition with Yongzh, who said he would not support the Xperia Play touchpad until ICS was supported on the Play.  I did an initial proof of concept, and feedback from members on the XDA Developers forum was overwhelmingly positive.  I worked out the kinks in the code through discussions with a couple members on XDA forums, and lots of tests by Epic_bubble, xperia64, and others.

4. Will upgrading to Ice Cream Sandwich make our current emulators nonfunctional? If so, how long do you think it will take for you to fix your emulators on your site to work with Ice Cream Sandwich? Sorry, I don't mean to pressure you into meeting a deadline, just really curious as a fan of yours. 
Paul - The Galaxy Nexus is the only one I have extensive data on related to ICS.  This device has intermittent issues with multi-touch, but since it is just one device I cannot say if this is an issue with ICS or just that specific system.  I do not expect ICS to pose a huge problem, though.  The main issue will be the soft menu, which will interfere with the virtual gamepad.  I'm currently working on writing a routine for hiding the soft menu that will be called after checking the Android version, so by the time ICS is more popular, this shouldn't be an issue.

5.Will beta testing ever be considered complete? And what comes after beta testing? 
Paul - Beta testing will be complete when all components of PC Mupen64Plus have been incorporated into the GUI (the main one remaining is cheats), and when I reach a level of compatibility comparable to PC Mupen64Plus. The main goals will be to eliminate as many game-specific graphics glitches as possible and to optimize the code to run most games full-speed on an unclocked 1GHz ARM7 Neon device.  At that point I will consider Beta testing complete, and will begin focusing more on features.  There are many things on my wish-list, including things like netplay, plug-in sharing, skin designer, etc.

6.I Believe you've mention that you were thinking about making a Sega Dreamcast emulator, is that still a possibility? 
Paul -  I would still like to tackle this as my next big project after Mupen64Plus AE is out of Beta testing in a year or two.  I would need more time to devote to the project than I have currently.

7.Are there any other Roms that I didn't mention above that run smoothly?

Paul - That depends entirely on your devices hardware.  For modern dual-core phones (like my wife's Droid Razer) many games run smoothly, and most are playable with some tweaking.  For older ARM6 devices, extensive tweaking is required to even get Mario64 running at a playable speed.  I'm trying to target single-core 1GHz ARM7 Neon devices (like the Droid X or Xperia Play) as the standard, since a large percentage of people own phones in this category.  But even in that category, there are wide differences in performance due to a lot of different hardware and ROM configurations.

8.Is there anything you might like to say to whoever is reading this?
Paul - Just thanks for reading :)

     I admire your work and dedication to these emulators and hope that you will get more recognition that you deserve. To people who are trying out the emulator, I highly suggest leaving questions and comments in the official Paulscode forums. Google Play, formerly called the Android Market, doesn't allow developers to reply in the comments section. He responds fairly fast and is really helpful. Please do so in a friendly manner, he doesn't take many breaks from what I can tell. A few things you can do that may increase the smoothness or the FPS (Frames Per Second) of the emulation are
-increasing Frameskip values
-turning off your phone and don't run anything else but the emulator when you turn it back on. Some apps may run in the background even after you close them and take up processing memory.
-turning off the virtual gamepad (for Xperia Play devices)
-turning off sound
-turning on airplane mode 
-overclocking your phone (by rooting) 

     Many of the bad review/comments I've seen for the emulator are due to the users being too lazy to find their own ROMS from the internet. TO PLAY N64 GAMES ON THIS YOU NEED TO DOWNLOAD A ROM for each individual game (like getting a Super Mario 64 game cartridge to play on a n64 system). This is the emulator imitating N64. You need to use the ROM (game file) for the specific game that you want to play. There is a lot of debate and confusion on the legality of roms, so my guess is YOU MAY ONLY DOWNLOAD AND/OR POSSESS ROMs of games that you actually own the cartridge or original hard copy of). USE A SEARCH ENGINE to find your rom(s). It is asking way too much to ask this unpaid developer to maintain a ROM site (illegal in a lot of ways) and continuously update and improve the emulators. Speaking of unpaid developer, someone has taken Paul's work and posted an "N64 Emulator" on the market . That "free" emulator with ads doesn't give credit to Paul Lamb and the Paulscode team at all and is probably making money off the advertisements in their version of the emulator.
 
I'm sorry Paul that you along with those that have helped you are not getting the credit and appreciation that you deserve . In my opinion, this is gaming history as well as smartphone history(at least for Android). Keep up the good, I mean great work. I hope this helped out someone out there. We can now carry a Nintendo 64 in our pockets.

LocoRoco Midnight carnival has been released for Xperia Play. The original LocoRoco on the PSP was a crazy phenomenon with brilliant bright pastel graphics and cute characters. Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom tips and guide for a game that has just blown apart the RPG /Fantasy genre on Android. I'm loving Majesty so much that I just had to share some of what I've learned to help improve your playing of this legendary RPG sim like Kingdom Management extravaganza.

Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom Guide

Guide to Majesty TFK Game Characters

 Fighting Heroes
Warrior (created from the Warriors' Guild): the footsoldiers of your Majesty  army; tough and resilient and up for anything for the right amount of in game cash!

Paladin (build a Majesty Paladin by having a Warriors' Guild with a Temple of Agrella): they move faster, have a more powerful attack and explore almost as much as the RPG game's scouts; they are very robust but very expensive characters to have.

Wizard
Wizard (you can find these dealers in magic in the  Wizards' Guild)
Like most Fantasy games the Wizards of Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom are the best damage dealers but need to be levelled up to deal huge amounts of damage. Only one hit at lower levels will kill them.

Wizards are crucial for many Majesty Missions  (including Dragon Hazard). Wizards are useless without the spells trained in the Library.
Harpies can not be harmed by magic in the Android Fantasy App and need to be avoided by Wizards . 

Different spells are learned at different levels. When the Wizard reaches the required level, he can use that spell.

Wizard Skills in Majesty: Fantasy Kingdom (Requires a level 1 Library):
Fire blast: Learned at level 3,  guarantees a kill on most enemies before they can hit him
Magic resistance: Very important against  Vampires' spells, but otherwise not very useful.
Teleport: Allows the Wizards of your Kingdom to get around really fast.

Wizards Skills (Requires a level 2 Library):
Meteorite storm: Learned at level 8, this skill allows wizards to destroy all enemies in a big area very quickly; meteors repeatedly land on a point causing widespread damage.
Fireball: Learned at level 5, casts a large sky borne ball of fire
Fire shield: Learned at level 2; increases the damage a wizard can take.

Making Wizards Live Longer
The Wizards of Majesty are quite weak when it comes to the amount of damage they can take, use these tips to help them live longer:

Building placement: Place the Wizard's guild away from the area the enemy tend to attack the most. The magic users need as much protection as possible so place guard towers and warrior guilds close to them.

Game saves: Save frequently on your Android device, keep the wizards effectively immortal by reloading a save when they die and the path they might tread the next time could lead to them surviving.

Invisibility: Majesty the Fantasy Kingdom game cheat: If a wizard's about to be attacked, make him Invisible manually! If a wizard dies a few seconds after a Game save, make him Invisible, and he won't die!

Cast invisibility  on enemy units to make their attacks stop.
Other Heroes
Tax collectors: Set the minimum amount of gold they take.Raise it later if income goes higher; this allows them to avoid dying on needless tax collections  for insignificant amounts of gold

Healer (You need a Temple of Agrella for this unit): very good support units, although they tend to favour one unit at the expense of others.

Necromancer (You need to have the Temple of Crypta to get these units):They raise skeletons and zombies who can fight in place of your normal warriors(but these raised dead are normally quite fragile).

Ranger (trained at Ranger's guild): good for cheap and fast exploring early-game, but they die easily
Elf (trained at Elven Bungalow):More useful than a Ranger
Dwarf (trained at Dwarven Fortress): slow but very robust warriors.


Building Use in Majesty :Fantasy Kingdom
Guild use is self-explanatory.

Guard tower: Very useful for protecting your wizards.

Marketplace: Significantly and crucially increases your money and provides you with useful healing potions.

Elven bungalow: These double your income from all your buildings, with one of these and one level 3 Marketplace, you will rarely be out of money

Gnome hovel: Very cheap to start with and great for keeping other buildings, like the marketplace, in good repair.

Best Places to put Your Buildings
Building placement is one of the most important parts of the game
Warriors' Guilds Place these in the directions where enemies come from.

Wizards' Guilds Place away from dangerous areas.

Marketplaces should be placed beside one or more Warriors' Guilds (preferably one to the southwest or northeast, and another one to the northwest) , the Warriors will provide great protection for the market.

General Tips for Majesty :TFK
Game saves: Save often when your warriors and wizards are at the peak of their health and power

Invisibility: The most important skill in the game, this helps your heroes stay alive if you use it on a low-health hero. If you use it on an enemy, you can have a hero ignore that enemy.

Heal: Cast the Heal (the cross) spell to keep units alive and able to retreat if things are going wrong.

Explore flags: Often, multiple (2 or 3) Explore flags will attract more heroes than one expensive one.

Attack flags and flags in general: Don't set flags in different directions. First have one target direction flagged, and when the target is close to being achieved, set the flag in the other direction. Also, don't set too many flags or too high-valued flags, as that will draw all your heroes away from your base and leave it underdefended in some cases.

If you've always wanted your FPS gaming fix on Ipad with the likes off Doom and Quake then you'll be thrilled to hear that the Grandaddy of all First Person Shooters is now on Ipad and Iphone: Marathon has arrived.
So what will the flames of the legendary Tozt.25 Flame Unit look like on the new Ipad's retina display (at the moment the game doesn't seem to be optimised but it's just a matter of time, for the all time popular FPS), will the M.75 Assault Rifle with Grenade Option give us as much of a thrill on Iphone as the original Mac Classic did? I still remember playing Quake 2 on the Playstation and any hard core FP shooting game that can recapture the nostalgia and sheer gameplay high jinks of multiple rocket explosions and waves of rabid enemies has got to be a hit in my book. Fans of the original Marathon and it's Durandal sequel will be champing at the bit to get hold of the new updated versions of the classic Mac games for their iOS device. 
The Cyborg Marine starring shooter is sure to get new fans too , not only due to the fact that the original and best FPS is now a free Ipad and Iphone game download, but the updated Marathon has some slick HD graphics and possibly a first for Ipad a "Master Chief Mode" which is sure to contain some huge surprises! (Master Chief to debut in a FPS on Ipad HD?!) 

DragonVale Guide to Breeding your Dragons

All you Dragonvale players out there are always asking how to combine your Dragons to get better and better powers. Here is a handy DragonVale Breeding Guide in Picture Chart form which should answer most of your questions about which of the beasts you need to combine. Hopefully the dragon breeding guide diagram will answer your basic questions about the hit Ipad game (habitats etc.) and will give you a heads up where to explore next. As for rare breeding in Dragon Vale we might explore a post on that next time! If you're new to the game and still confused about app topics like bonus and space this is a good place to start. Basic questions like " How do you make a Water Dragon in Dragon Vale?" (hint:it's a lightning and cold dragon, you just need them to mature a bit and it's recommended to put the cold dragon on the left), and other simple Draconean mating questions should be answered by this breeding guide chart. Some other quick hints before you go off and explore the diagram: Air dragon is water and fire combined. Rumours ( unproven by me or any other DragonVale friends of making a rainbow dragon by combining 2 level ten dragons and having a lot of luck to get the magic creature still remain just Vale rumours). Is this the best way to get the Rainbow Dragon in Dragon Vale? -answers in comments if you have any other suggestions about the rainbow.Spend your gems wisely!
