SpeedGlow Speedometer App for IOS

HUD App
SpeedGlow Speedo App with built in HUD

Right let's summarise first: It's a speedometer app, it's accurate in measuring your speed, it looks good with a minimalist interface and it's simplicity itself to use. And that applovers is what SpeedGlow Speedometer app is all about.
I got the summary out of the way first because I really wanted to wax lyrical on one of the speedo apps best features: The HUD. Ever since I heard of Heads Up Displays on top end luxury vehicles like BMWs and Audis I've wanted one. However the app reviewing business isn't multimillion dollar enough to afford a car HUD yet! But guess what SpeedGlow is a HUD app for your car too! With simple mirroring you place your iDevice on the car's dashboard and it reflects on to the windscreen: instant HUD!
Clean and easy interface
That feature alone is worth the price of entry but of course is not the entirety of the speed measuring application.
As I mentioned earlier the interface is great, it dispenses with superfluous information and just gives you the basics necessary to measure your car's speed.
The touch interface is very well thought out too, with colour changes, HUD up and speed limit setting all from simple gestures.
Of course for serious utility app users you'll be wanting to get an indispensable function from your app, aside from everything else the app measures speed accurately and can be used to warn you when you approach your defined limit. Of course if you're a racer the function that records the top speed reached is also useful.
Speedometer app for iPhone and iPad
Controls are very easy and intuitive
In our test we measured the apps velocity measuring with 2 Satnavs, the Satnavs use the same GPS type measuring as the app and the fact that all three tallied with the car speedometer itself registering 5 mph less than our 60 mph just shows this apps usefulness.
So if you want a well designed speedometer app that will give you a true indication of your speed then SpeedGlow needs to be installed on your iDevice. And did we mention that it's the cheapest and best vehicle HUD too!

Music Hero: Rock on your phone!

I haven't played with many Music apps(Rock Band, Guitar Hero, Dance Dance Revolution) but a quick search and testing for such apps has resulted with Music Hero as one of my favorites. Not only are the three default songs fast, which makes it feel more difficult, but it allows you to import your own songs into the app for gameplay. Imported songs however don't necessarily have matching music notes with the button presses, but it's a good start. The colors are brightly there and the menu's are easy to navigate. Just make sure you press play on the bottom after selecting a song. Most similar games automatically start when you select the song. The smartphone application has an average rating of 4.3 on Google Play with over 5 million installs. It has 2 Difficulty Levels. The notes don't get silenced when you miss the timing, but it's still fun and FREE.

There is one piece of advice when using your own mp3's as tracks to play. The tracks must have an artist name and track name (and maybe the title can't contain the character "-"). I was lazy and my mp3 tracks that didn't meet these requirements caused the app to malfunction until it was reloaded. I'm not sure how long the fun will last with only 3 available songs and customized(not fully compatible) songs, but it definitely is the funnest Rhythm Game genre apps for Android OS.

Good Luck on your app search.

Is today's S3 update Android Jellybean?

We've waited ages for the Jellybean update for the Samsung S3, and finally our review phone has asked us if we want install an update.
So with bated breath we watched a new edition of Android load onto the Samsung , only to find that Google is still teasing us and that despite a rumoured Jbean software version for "sometime in August/September" all we had today was an update to ICS 4.04. So no Google Now yet, just a slightly slicker edition of ICS, the wait continues!

Gluey: Fluid Physics Game on iOS

Gluey-Addictive Liquid Blob Physics Game
With super fast chipsets, million palette colours and more graphical superb ness than you can shake a stick at it is often very hard to separate one great IOS puzzle game from another. You really do need a unique selling point and need to avoid the pitfalls of so many cheap apps that just emulate the top of the chart heroes. So does Gluey have that unique selling point and Xfactor addictiveness that is the hallmark of a great puzzle app?

Well it's certainly got character with the gooey ( gluey) blobs imbued with personality with little eyes not just adding to the glueys' personification but helping with the gameplay. What must be said though is that in later updates we hope to see more differentiation between them, they're very well designed but at the moment just different colours separate the glueys from each other. Names and other quirks I'm sure can be added to give them even more personality.
But enough about the finer details; what you really need to know is how the game plays out. Divided into 3 different types of puzzling : Puzzle levels, strategy and Endless modes await. All the modes are built around the central idea of joining the glueys of the same colour together in order to eliminate them. We loved the way they sloshed and gurgled in their container providing a brilliant showcase for fluid dynamics on iOS. Inadvertently perhaps one of the best lava lamp emulations we've seen! A variety of game changing attributes such as poisonous blobs and locked glueys are drip fed through the game keeping the formula fresh.
Developer Mobileage is known for one of the most popular Mahjong Apps on Ios (Shanghai Mahjong) , as a tentative dip into the water for their expansion into puzzle apps Gluey certainly works and will provide some great puzzle gaming distraction.
Gluey available on Appstore now!

iOS Puzzle games that make you think

Balancing Ball on iOS
We love the instant AppStore convenience of Ipad gaming, there's always something new, exciting and nostalgia inducing to download. Balancing Ball our latest IOS puzzle find has certainly invoked our sense of nostalgia and excitement . Before we elaborate on the ins and outs of Balancing Ball I'll tell you about the immediate nostalgia it induced.
You've probably guessed from its title that we're looking at a Marble Madness type of game (and generally these balancing games work very well on iPhone and iPad). But my morning was spent going through a lot of game archives after my first Balancing Ball play through . The reason being that the whole experience down to some very vividly coloured graphics reminded me of one of the first balancing games I played on the original PSP way back in 1995. After much research (about an hour of net crawling) I found the name of the PSP game that this iOS puzzler reminds me of : Archer Maclean's Mercury.
In '95 I spent a lot of my initial love affair with the PSP playing Mercury, so the fact that Bball reminds me so much of it is a massive plus, and also a comment on how awesome it is being an iOS gamer as this balance puzzler can be had for a fraction of the price of the PSP classic.
Archer Macleans Mercury on iPad?
Fun nostalgia inducing iPhone Balance game
Balance Ball is not just for nostalgia though, it really gets the adrenalin flowing as you try to frantically balance the ball into the goal area (note to self though: probably the worst type of game to play with a squirming baby on your lap!)
The game comes at you thick and fast and you're soon negotiating obstacles and even multiple balls. Skinned with some attractive bright graphics and good gameplay Balancing Ball will give you a worthwhile balancing game experience.

Improving graphical performance for Asphalt 7 Heat for Tegra 3 and iPad 3

Graphical secrets of Gameloft
Better  Gameloft game Graphics for Tegra 3 and the New iPad
Asphalt 7 Heat is one of the premier racing games from Gameloft, there's a lot of graphical power behind this app and for all you graphics geeks and programmers out there we've researched what makes Asphalt 7's graphics so good on the new iPad and especially on Tegra 3 Android devices. BREAKING NEWS: As of 28 September this racing game is being heavily discounted on Google Play.

At the moment the graphics of Asphalt 7 are some of the best that programmers have been able to squeeze out of the new iPad ( still no bikes here though we'd love to see how good a set of michelin motorcycle tires looked on the retina Display). Expect the usual blur, depth of field and lens flare. But it really does start to come close to this generation of consoles graphics with some beautifully rendered environments. Gameloft's genius's have been very close lipped when it comes to what makes Asphalt 7's visuals so extraordinary on the new iPad , suffice to say that they're currently pushing the iOS beast's Quad core graphics chip to the max with users having to choose between various settings to get the best performance from the game. A toss up between frame rates , draw distances and special effects.

Luckily we've been able to find more in depth info about how the game's graphics are utilised by Tegra 3 Android devices. As we all know some of the most cutting edge Android games are coming out on Tegar 3 devices and while Asphalt Heat is not a Tegra exclusive it still gets a lot out of the graphics chip.
How to improve Asphalt Performance on Android(Tegra 3 configurations for power users)
Gameloft considers Tegra3 devices as "android_medium" two steps below the full android_high mode
This will improve the graphics for Asphalt 7 on the One X without a hit on the frame rate
Runs very smoothly with interactive governor and aggressive minfrees , these type of games are very RAm intensive
- Added full dynamic reflections without frame rate skip
- Added traffic shadows
- Added blur effect on impact
- Use high quality car shader
- Use second render target ( to give increased visual "bloom")
- Added swf post effect
-The  car reflections in the  garage are just another great effect.
- Increased car detail in gameplay and in garage vs SGS3
No hope in using the High map mode which includes higher detailed tracks with better textures and buildings' window reflections, because its killing the frame rate-this is the same type of consideration behind the game on the new iPad.
No hope in fixing the texture clipping issues since this game refuses specific considerations for the NV GPU and its methods on Tegra 3 devices

Dungeon Raid : Definitely worth a crawl

Dungeon Raid is a very addictive puzzle game for iPhone. You start of as a Human Adventurer, with a randomly-selected, one-screen backstory. Just enough to get your imagination rolling and not enough to be cumbersome. As you play you'll be able to unlock and level up more classes, races, and abilities.

To explore, slide your finger across the screen to link together identical items; rather logically, coins will yield money for upgrade, potions regenerate your health and shields improve your defence. If you want to destroy the skull-like enemies, link them with sword to deal damage.

This very simple gameplay is rich with many strategies, especially if you go after all the achievements available through the Openfeint system. In addition, you have three game modes and 4 difficulties lengthen even more its replayability.

I very warmly recommend this game, especially as a free demo is available and as the completegame will cost you all of three dollars; definitely not bad for a game worth several hours of fun.

Is New Star Soccer back on the AppStore?

New Star Soccer has returned to the AppStore after its recent removal following a defective update.
To soften the pain of being New Starless for so long the new iOS update builds dramatically on the previous version. The iPad soccer lifestyle game is now essentially bugfree, has the freekick and corner skills down to perfection, includes post match interviews,an array of Football kits and Casino visits!
The new update is also more balanced, solves dodgy relationship meter problems and goal score line wise is a lot more realistic. Get to the AppStore now and download NewStar Soccer before problems with this version are found!

Picnic Raiders

Everybody remembers Ant Smasher. When it first came out it was a touch screen sensation, the gameplay was simplicity itself as you would mash wave after wave of bugs. Well we've moved on a bit from then, but some gaming desires haven't I still want to smash bugs!
But now there's a much better and more advanced game to do some serious bug mashing with, and it's free. Picnic Raiders takes the winning formula of bug smashing, contextualises it and does a whole lot more to make a twitch gaming action app with a whole lot of appeal .
Firstly it's pick up and play nature is just so appealing: There's a bug smash it! It's an ingrained instinct. But these bugs also bite back, adding a degree of caution to what could just be random smashing. The game also adds a reason for your smashing: These bugs are out to get your picnic! A degree of strategy is thrown into the mix in the full game too; as your picnic can be moved around to avoid the larger swarms and also leftovers used to lure the beasties away.
We love the design of the bugs, they err just on the right side of cute while still wanting to make you smash 'em!

Design wise a lot of thought has gone into the game and every few levels new bugs will come your way each with a different attack pattern. This type of gaming soon transforms Picnic Raiders from a mindless mash 'em up to some hardcore twitch gaming. Bullet Hell with Bugs!
Soundwise we're also on to a winner here as the effects neatly complement a nice fun little game. As a free download it's a certainty. By unlocking the full game you'll have access to more levels and bugs and a "Whack a Mole" type game starring the bugs themselves.

The Best Football Games for Mobile Devices

Best Football Games for iPad and other Mobile Devices
Now that the Olympics are over it's time to get back to the serious sports! So we've been scouring the Appstore for the best Football games out at the moment (we're talking David Beckham style football by the way , not Gridiron).
Football Manager, Fusball Fuhrer or whatver other incarnations it's gone in over the years and across the globe, Football manager still remains one of the most popular time wasters and I believe still retains the title of Videogame most cited in divorce cases. So if you've got years to waste on managing a virtual Football team and want to stock up on fantasy football trophies ; then check out the ever popular management sim available on all iDevices.

Best iPad Football Game?
New Star Soccer is one of the new kids on the block and probably the game that wags love playing as it is not only a brilliant Football game but a virtual life sim of a footballer on and off the field. Play well and you'll keep your  (virtual) girlfriend and teammates happy, play badly and your popularity will fall and you'll have less access to the in game perks.

FIFA and it's yearly incarnations is still one of EA's best selling franchises and the mobile version and despite FIF 12 having the hefty price of almost ten dollars on iPad it is still an extremely popular app.
If you fancy free Football apps though then Gameloft's Real Football 2012 is a must have. With the unique ability to play a game that you've just seen televised the in app purchase supported game (you need to have "stamina" to play) is a firm fan favourite.
Finally FIFA's rival Pro Evolution Soccer has also made its way to mobile devices but just like its original game has some brilliant gameplay but is hampered by a lack of licences (it is Freemium though so definitely worth a (penalty) shot.

Guitar Hero App's 5 + 6 (Review)

The Guitar Hero series and Rock Band Series were an epic addition to Gaming. Although the gaming instruments cost a lot, it was fun when you finally had them. Although I prefer the gameplay and interface of Rock Band, I cannot deny some of the exclusively epic songs from the GH games. Songs and genre being liked may be due to preferences, both have their own great songs. The  Guitar Hero 5  app and  Guitar Hero 6  app brings you some of the sweetness into your phone. Your smartphone will be your instrument. That'll bring down the weight and need for extra equipment. I am not going to lie and try to sell to you the idea that the experience from the phone comes close to playing the console versions, but it's still nice to have and feel proud about. Their Demo Versions are FREE (which are what I'm covering in this article). Both 5 and 6 have an unique rock version of the Glu Mobile startup animation with a retro kind of look. And both have that Guitar Hero function that Rock Band didn't have, a countdown until the game continues after you resume from pausing a game.

 Guitar Hero 5
GH5 has a much cooler loading screen, a blue wire connected to guitar shows the loading progress. It has a better looking Home screen icon and menu artwork compared to GH6. You get to play Guitar, Bass, or Drums. This makes it a little closer to their real versions (although I've only tested the guitar). The smartphone app currently has over 5 Million downloads on Google Play. Not surprising as it's part of a big franchise. The 3 songs available in the demo are:

Ex-Girlfriend as made famous by No Doubt
Kryptonite as made famous by Three Doors Down

What I Got as made famous by Sublime
Here comes the criticism. Guitar Hero 5 has a good list of songs. 3 Songs are playable in the free version. That isn't a bad thing until halfway through the first song (or less than half) and the game gives you an ultimatum. Close the app, or pay and upgrade to the full version. The ultimatum doesn't say "pay," it just says "download". I am not sure how to get free seconds of Demo song playing, but after a few days I got to play 10-20 more notes. I tried to go back before I might use up my notes(if that makes sense), but the game decided that in order for me to go back to the menu I had to upgrade. I said no thank you and it closed on me.

Guitar Hero 6 Warriors of Rock
This app lets you play 3 songs with the possibility of actually finishing the song.
 -Cryin' by Aerosmith,
-Ghost by Slash ft Ian Astbury
 -Dancing Through Sunday by AFI

GH6 has only two screenshots on Google Play. One is of gameplay, and the other is an advertisement? It has over 1 million installs on Google Play.

The Bad News
Both smartphone apps have a screen before song selection that asks you if you want to continue with the limited version. However on this screen, there is no option within the game to answer that question. You just tap the screen to move on, which can be seen as answering "yes" or just avoiding the question anyways. Oh and they both ask at startup, before that Glu sign, if you want to enable sound. I understand that a person might be in a quiet environment, but then why play a guitar version of Dance Dance Revolution if you're going to play without sound? Both of them also let you download an mp3 version of the available songs into the app to improve their sound quality. I get the feeling that their mp3's aren't as loud as usual mp3's. Also, these two GH games seems to be on EASY mode. You hear a lot more guitar notes than you are playing. There isn't a difficulty mode, and the demo's on GH6 are easy, (Maybe "Dancing Through Sunday" can be taken as on Medium Difficulty). I can't remember GH5 very well because it doesn't really allow to play much.

Conclusion,
You will be very unsatisfied with GH5 unless you just wanted to see how it's menu looked and the songs the full version has. BE VERY CAREFUL about buying songs in the game, or just BE VERY AWARE THAT IT IS COMMON TO FIND USER REVIEWS STATING THAT THEY ARE NOT RECEIVING THEIR PURCHASES THEY PAID FOR. I Recommend you try the Music Hero app and Tap Tap Revenge 4. If you've read this far then you're probably interested in this type of game for your phone. I'll go into more details in a review specifically for those apps coming soon. I promise. Both GH games only have an average user rating of 3.5 or 3.4 on Google Play. (Although, they are just demo's and should be expected to be the games). The console versions of the games were expensive when they came out. Their instruments were even more expensive (for example a 2nd guitar to have one as Bass)

None of these guitar gaming apps has the feature where if you miss a note then that note won't get played in the music. They all have only 3 colored buttons.

Samsung manufacturing

We've done some research into where Samsung manufactures its components. As an investigative app journalist this could prove to be some valuable insider information about the Korean tech giant.
After all most leaks about the IPhone 5 are coming from manufacturing plants. So we suggest that if you're serious about finding out about the latest Samsung mobile tech first that you use this list to generate some contacts. Happy industrial spying!
Where Samsung Korea Makes its Mobile Phones and More
Giheung Complex: Semiconductors; TFT-LCDS
Gumi Plant: Cell Phones; PCS Handsets; HDD; Fibre Optics; Communications Transferring Equipment
Chonan Plant: Cell Phones; PCS Handsets; HDD; Fibre Optics; Communications Transferring Equipment
Onyang Plant: Semiconductors (assembly and testing)
Hwasung Plant: Semiconductors

So if you want to know where Samsung makes their products and what technology is a closely guarded secret; contacts from these plants would be what you need. Personally I'd try to get a contact at Onyang or one of the Samsung Mobile Assembly Plants. However being a large electronic conglomerate this is not some sort of plastic printers plastic printing cards but a serious high tech company so if you do go digging for info then expect to have to negotiate some very tight lipped employees and water tight NDA agreements.

Waypoint Marker and Locator for Android

Android Map Waypoint marker
and Locator.
"Find my car" apps and "Where's my phone?" apps on Google Play are so last year. Don't get me wrong the locator type of apps are great when you've got a GPS toting Android phone, but they lack features and are notoriously difficult to use. And you know what, I've never lost my car, with or without my Android's help I've always found my way back to my ride.

But what I have lost/misplaced or simply forgotten where it is, is that easy to play Golf Course with the lovely straight back 9 Fairways, and the kids have never forgiven me for "misplacing" that sheltered beach they love so much. And don't even get me started on the grief my partner gives me for forgetting where that romantic Italian Diner was (hey give me a break it was a long and drunken evening I can't remember every back alley we explored that night!)

But you know what? I've got hold of an app that could save me so much trouble and earache. Call it a more sophisticated cousin of the  Android Car Finding apps.
On Spot Waypoint Marker Finder lets you GPS mark whatever you want and then adds some great bells and whistles. It's all well and fine GPS waypointing a secluded Big Bass Fishing spot, but what's just another point on a map? Well simply add a photo or even jot down some quick notes about your waypoint easily and quickly on your Android phone and Fishing spot or whatever you want will be indelibly marked on your map with an explanation and even a picture of what it is.
The Android waypoint marker will not only always allow you to find your way home but will also make every mysterious and brilliant place you ever go to  with your phone not just a memory , but a simple navigation away. Hikers, adventurers, golfers, shoppers everybody with an Android phone should have this ease of reference way point app. Trust me: Treasured memories of great places are so much better if they can be experienced over and over again. Now where are those car keys.....

What it means to be a Samsung SmartPhone Owner

Since we upgraded our Android app review phone from an Xperia Play to a Samsung galaxy smartphone (S3 version of course) we've taken a big interest in what it means to be an owner of one of the Korean technology giants smartphones.

Firstly software wise Samsung has proprietary Android skins in the form of Touchwizz the Interface that Sammy layers on to the stock Ice Cream Sandwich version of Android. While on the subject of the S3s OS because of the phone's powerful processor we expect the upgrade to Jellybean to come any day now; making the S3 one of the first non native Jellybean phones to upgrade.
As a side note the Samsung Galaxy S3 should also be able to use KeyLime Pie when that's released.
Other delights for Samsung's Flagship phone owners include a dedicated AppStore with occasional great freebies.

Finding the best weapons for Monks in Order and Chaos Online

Best PvP weapons for Monk
Find the best Weapons for the Monk in Order and Chaos Online
Due to recent updates (PvP Arenas in Greenmont and Mounts) Order and Chaos Online is flourishing just after it's first birthday and also currently reaping the benefits of Gameloft's infamous sales. If you're a Monk in Order and Chaos this article will give you some helping hands in finding the best weapons for your Order and Chaos class.

Noobs to the MMORPG genre will be clueless and won't know their 2 handed fire staves of damage from a braided stainless steel hose , so a little about the Monk class first. If you've played similar games then you'll be most likely to compare Gameloft's Monk to the familiar Paladin Class. He specialises in melee damage and support through buffs. Wisdom is the best stat for a monk in this game and generally the types of weapons you can expect to use are staves, fist type weapons and one handed maces. If you want to concentrate your holy skills on destruction than follow the Military Monk Damage per Second tree.

Should the Monk Use Dual Weapon Wielding?
The only problem with dual wielding for an Order and Chaos Monk is the lack of good fist or mace weapons. Some argue that even though this combination doesn't have as great Hit/Critical hit points the DPS and overall damage might compensate for the less powerful weapons.
Finally the Best Weapon for Monks....(?)
Camp of Hemir in Whispering Woods
is where you find Collapser's Knuckle
For lower level Monks all our research indicates that Collapser's Knuckle is a good weapon to acquire early and reap the benefits when you've substantially levelled up. Get Collapser's Knuckle from a quest around level 40ish ( Camp of Hemir in the Whispering Islands?). A 3.1 speed polearm can be acquired after Level 45+ which also performs more than adequately. Level 58 Blue fists seem to be a standard choice though.
What weapons work best with PvP Play?
Lava King's trident has a brilliant area stun when used in conjunction with the Mantis Daze. Generally 2 handed weapons are sluggish when it comes to PvE but better with PvP.

Sexism in the gaming community

Sexism in video games is a subject that many have wrote about. We at Gametrender have run two pieces about sexist characters. What I'd like to elaborate on in this article is the reactions such claims of games being sexist often raise; i.e., otherwise intelligent people who just dismiss the claims as an overreaction from supposed "feminazis".

One of the ways of this dismissal is: "Hollywood does it too". Two wrongs don't make a right. A bad behavior is still bad, even if it has followers. Besides, gamers are always crying that games aren't recognized as an art form: leading the way regarding the controversy would be the perfect way to show that games are not, in fact, just the province of heterosexual male entrenched in their entitlement as the "norm".

Another way is "well, it's part of the gaming community." as said by Aris Bakhtanians. Look, it's like saying that racism is inherent to the definition of the Klu Klux Klan and thus, trying to stamp out this vile ideology is somehow wrong when it comes to the Klan. Newsflash, geniuses: going against proven racist or sexist behaviors are NEVER a bad idea, and no one should be built its identity around them.

The last way is maybe more pernicious and deserve a longer counter-argument, because it's misrepresent the feminist gripe: "Male character are idealized too". A sexy lady in a game is not a problem; like the male players, we girls like having some ideal "us" on the screen. This is the same as with most movies, since some like to use that comparison. But in games, we don't so much see someone we'd like to be, as we see a toy for male fantasies.

"Toy" is real the key word here, as what we object to are the objectivization. One way is to use the girl as a simple damsel in distress so useless that she could be an inert MacGuffin for all the story cares.

Another way is to make her act like she putting on a peepshow for the audience. That later attitude is also part of the reason "male character design is also irrealistic and idealized" falls short: a male character is never, never here to pleasure a female or male homosexual audience, but to give the heterosexual male player some avatar strength.

Plus, this peepshow is a way to always subordinate her sexuality to men, instead of just, you know, being a normal woman in charge of their sexuality. Some characters are virginal, naive, and innocent; generally they are MacGuffin (see above) and their occasional shoving in a refrigerator is supposed to make us feel sad, because she was a good person, right?

Some other character have very dominatrix tendencies (see Ivy from Soul Calibur); or they are sex workers; the point is to show that they are "inherently" paragons of sinful and thus ultimately to "justify" the violence against them: have you seen some of the scenes of Call of Juarez? The casual violence against some of the strippers is appalling, just strangling them in order to interrogate them (and I won't even touch on their misrepresentation of human trafficking for sex).

To go back to our article on Lara Croft's attempted rape, "Rape as Backstory" is so trite because it's overwhelming used "for" female characters, almost never male ones. Unless they're homosexual (another issue of gaming), the sexuality of male characters and their attitude towards sex is never used as a way to differentiate between evil and good characters or to create a cheap pathos. Heck, if we use that standard, Duke Nukem would be the bad guy of his games; but, no he's viewed as an exaggeration of male behaviors, instead of as a perversion of these.

Now, you may think that I hate men or games. It couldn't be farther from the truth. Like a lot of feminists of both sexes, I've worked in the industry for years, have been a gamer for decades, and deeply care about games. If anything, we feminists want to improve games, because we think they can so much more than just a vehicle for tired tropes.

Review : Dofus

Full disclosure here : I did an internship at Ankama, the developer/publisher of Dofus, for a couple months back in 2007. One of the reason I got it at all was that I loved the still-young game and had actually checked if they were offering such opportunities.
More than 5 years later, not even the disappointment of no being picked up for a permanent position could diminish my love of Dofus. First and foremost, there is some jingoism going on there : it was a passion project by 3 penniless Frenchies and it just happened to launch its beta at perfectly the right time (2003) to offer a French-speaking, cheap, multiplatform alternative to Asia-originated Free-to-play like lineage and expensive title like WoW.
So, Dofus is a Flash game, originally playable in your browser, now client-based, that can thus be played on any platform; when you thought a Mac would be better for your journalism studies or when you think Linux is the only worthy OS, finding even one good game that works on your computer is a boon. Plus, free download of the very-light, very-easy-to-install client, indefinite trial period with only a level cap, and a mini-price of 5euros per month once you wanted to get more.

The art style is very anime-like and cute, which explains its popularity with both genders, leading to one of the most well-balanced community in that regard. On the other end, that same community's average age is in the teens. To round up the aesthetics, the musics are really well-down and have even been collecting into CDs.
Actually, the marketing and abundant merchandising, like the mangas, plushies, or magazines, are what explains the popularity with high-schoolers. Some say the IP is being corrupted by this overly corporate approach... I can understand that, but I think the owners have done a good job of keeping it low cost. The game suscription itself has transitioned to a system like Eve Online : you can still pay with your real-life money, or you can accumulate enough soft currency (kamas) to buy the hard currency (Ogrines) and pay with the latter; inversely, you can buy Ogrines with dollars or euros and resell it in game to get more kamas, which let you buy ressources or equipment in the auction houses. So this game can be entirely free-to-play if you know how to "farm" enough kamas - which isn't that difficult. And all that with weekly updates.
The in-game economy is entirely player-driven, even with the addition of the Ogrines. Anything can crafted, if you have the right profession and the adequate level in said profession; likewise, if you want to augment the initial stats of the equipment. All ressources for the crafts can be looted in game – or bought from someone who looted it.
The ultimate loot, the ones who give their names to the game, are the Dofus, magical dragon eggs with some very-sought-after properties. Nowadays, there are equipements that gives some of the same advantages, but the Dofus are in a different quipment slot, allowing to stack the bonus. On of the appeal of Dofus is that all of the 14 classes (some suscriber-only) have several viable builds. Oh, each of these build has its preferred equipent, so you'll end up looking like a lot of other players – Unless you use some « living items » to hide what you wearing and thus how you fight.
Apart from the aesthetical aspect, hiding can be very useful in PvP, one of the better aspect of the game. You can play solely against the environment if you choose; but, in addition to passing opportunities for experience, kamas, and special equipment, the combat system is conducive to actual strategy and not to just mindlessly wailing on your opponent. Why that? It's a turn-based, mouse-controlled (though keyboard shortcuts exist), 2D/third-person system that even people with zero experience in gaming can pick up easily, thanks to the tutorial zone.
Remember how I talk about PvP, different builds, crafting and all that? You can safely experiment, reset and start anew in that zone, up to the level 16. If the fact that the client is free to download, the trial period is indefinite, and the colourful screenshots, aren't enough to make you try Dofus out, than you are not as lazy or girly as me.

Paranormal Ghost Camera App for Android

Scary Ghost Cam for
Android
You wouldn't think that cutting edged technology and atavistic fears go hand in hand, but they do. The more we've delved into Android Apps the more weird , wonderful and downright scary apps we've come across. Scary Ghost Cam for Android is the latest we've come across and it certainly sends a yellowing broken nailed finger of fear icing down our spine. So much so that I insisted on reviewing the horror app in broad daylight and only using stock images in the review, just for the fear of awakening the occult by messing with things on my Android phone that I shouldn't!

If you're looking for a bit of photographic fun or want to scare the bejeesus out of people than Scary Ghost Cam should be just what you want. Right before we start carrying on how spin tingling this app is let's just say it simple: Scary Ghost Cam lets you take pictures or use your own photos and allows you to add spooks, ghouls and scary effects to them.
Add over 40 ghosts to
your Android photos

The interface is brilliantly simple, with the only complaint being that the sliders for Zoom, saturation and other settings could be a bit larger as they sometimes failed to detect my fingers. It's very easy and intuitive to add the over 40 ghosts included in the app and manipulate the images, you can also go the extra mile by adding as many bucketloads of blood to the photo as you want.
Before the day became too overcast and I became too scared to use the scary app I had great fun taking photos of the family (and deleting them afterwards so as not to provoke the supernatural with messing with images of the unknown). The images were very easy to take, just using the stock Android camera accessed through the app and with a couple of button presses here and there we soon had ghosts looming over wives shoulders and a very gore spattered scene. To further add realism to the scary photos the app gives you the ability to change the saturation and contrast of the photos.
Scary Ghost Cam is very easy to use
If I wanted to spit in the face of the occult and take my chances I could quite easily have shared the photos on Twitter, Facebook and Email. I didn't have the guts to, but when you buy the scary app if sharing your scary pics via social media is your thing than once again the app makes it very easy to do this.
So fancy facing up to the occult and overcoming your fears by ghostifying your photos?

An App for Finance Professionals

Portable financial app
Valuation App
If you're a City man or a Wall Street Guru or have any aspirations to be; then chances are you've explored the various app stores for apps for financial professionals. You've also probably battered your head against the wall a hundred times when you've encountered the need to perform complex financial calculations like working out Precedent transactions or monetary    Comparable analysis.

Now the thing is that whether you're already a high flying professional financial advisor operating out of New York or elsewhere or are just planning on having a profitable financial planner career you're in the demographic that owns a Smartphone. And more importantly you're smart enough to use it both to make money, save money and make your stressful job that little bit easier.
If you're an Android owner and already an entrepreneur, investment banker, venture capitalist or a related career or are looking to be one in the future than you will know all about "EBITDA", "DCF" and other financial instruments . Put it simply the Android systems VALUATION APP  performs complex financial calculations and does it very easily and hassle free.
Android app for  CAPM and more

Since I'm a mere app reviewer aside from a few small forays into Financial Spread Betting (unsuccessful I might add, perhaps this app would have made my Spread Betting Hobby more lucrative!) I don't really understand the ins and outs of these market related ideas. So when asked to review Valuation App I initially baulked, but than after a bit of research decided that I would be able to provide a very solid review for the app and also happily recommend it , if you're in the market for free financial planning software on Android in the form of an inexpensive financial planning app.

Firstly let's look at the context of this application. For this type of software you can expect to pay a hefty amount, look up professional apps worth owning and you'll find related apps like the iBank ($59.99) and Koku ($29.99) apps. Now traditionally apps for budgets, cash flow , expenses and such like traditionally retail at a higher price than others. Now Valuation App doesn't even really fit into these categories, because even though it's money related it is aimed at financial professionals, not everyday folk trying to save a buck with their Android phone. So you should expect it to come in at a massive price. It doesn't it's free!

So a free app for a financial professional! Surely feature wise there has to be some catch. The only small catch is that for the full set of features:

CAPM
Beta
WACC
Income Statement
Free Cash Flows
Discounted Cash Flows
Comparable Analysis
Precedent Transactions
Time Value of Money
Startup Valuation
You'll be paying 0.99c. For the fully free version the app will allow you to work out  Beta, CAPM, WACC, Free Cash Flows and Time Value of Money

Impressively enough the app also comes with a very well designed glossary to explain these financial terms if some are unfamiliar to you. We mentioned ease of use before too and once again the app more than delivers with a good clean interface which makes it very easy to input the required data. The app claims that it delivers valuation techniques comparable to those used in the real world, feature wise this is an absolute certainty, all that remains is for those in need of a portable tool for financial professionals to perform complex calculations on their Android phones to download the multifaceted and well designed app from Google Play:

Top Korean App makes its way West

I'm Clock: Korea's Number one Paid iPhone App
About a decade ago when Eastern gaming and technology markets jumped on a massive product release; Western markets were soon to follow as at that stage the East was the trendsetter for technology. As games, consoles and technology has moved its epicentre westwards in some ways other areas like Japan and China are lagging behind. However, in recent years with the rise of Mobile gaming and apps new and exciting Eastern countries like South Korea with blockbuster mobile devs like Gamevil are starting to reclaim the crown of technology and software experts.
So when an app that is number one in the Korean Appstore makes its way onto Western appstores, you've just got to sit up and take notice.

I'm Clock: Korean app success seeks Fame in the West
Clocks, alarms, stopwatches, countdown timers, egg-timers and any other horological app for iDevices that you can think of have been done a million and one times. So why is "I'm Clock" such a success in South Korea and can it overcome any cultural barriers to make it big on other appstores?
Look at I'm Clock's feature list and you can see that if you're needing to buy a clock app for your iPhone or iPad then just based on features this app could be something special:
Multi featured iOS clock with mood enhancing
capabilities

  • It's minimalist-so looks something special, pundits would call it a Feng Shui clock experience for your iDevice, we just say it looks very stylish
  • Alarms and snoozing are supported, easily set and accessed even when the app is shut
  • A comprehensive live weather forecast comes with the clock app. Sundials, barometers and time keeping have gone together since time immemorial, so this app just keeps up a timeheld tradition
  • Time of day backgrounds and accompanying music: Now this is where the app transforms itself from just another clock app to something more and better. Natural themes are embodied and set moods fantastically and as for the music itself, there are none emotive tracks compiled by the developers themselves. Now that's dedication! (And it works rather well with the emotive-and customisable- background wallpapers and music providing an evocative experience to a mere clock app.

So back to the aforementioned app localisation problems, the fact is there aren't any. The only reason this "digital sensitivity clock" won't find worldwide success is if people don't hear of it. Well now you have, so if you want an emotive , experiental clock with multiple features than you need look no further than
I'm Clock for iPad and iPhone

What updates do MMORPG players really want?

Two of the hottest names in non mainstream MMORPGs at the moment are Vindictus and Order and Chaos Online. These two in depth modern role players; despite being essentially on separate platforms, Order and Chaos being one of the most popular online RPGs for Android and IOS multi platform gaming, and Vindictus being an alternate Browser game, are following in the footsteps of more established games in the genre by introducing updates to keep their gaming intellectual properties new and fresh.
Mabinogi heroes, Vindictus update
Vindictus Pets
Vindictus is looking like WoW, Everquest and so many before it introduce pets, known as Vindictus Gremlins to its game," a fierce battle bird/bunny, sporting soft fur, floppy ears and a pointy beak, called a Gremlin. The Gremlin come in three types, the buff colored Tiny Gremlin, which is prone to mindless violence; the purple featured Punk Gremlin which brings a rock-n-roll attitude into fights and the Armor Gremlin, which comes equipped with armor from fallen enemies." (as a side note I've also seen these Pets referred to as the Baby and Husky Gremlin-not Punk and Tiny)
New mount and PvP update for Order and Chaos
Gameloft's Order and Chaos Mounts
While Order and Chaos is also going down a similar route but the new animals introduced here are mounts to be used in the online game, we've seen evidence of horses as mounts , but also lions and stags (what about being different eh Gameloft and giving us something for the technical classes? I for one would love to see something like a roll-a-bout just for the comedy value alone!) Of course being one of the foremost mobile developers Gameloft has promised the biggest update ever and will also be introducing the much sought after PvP arenas for Order and Chaos ;new quests, new items and a"darker and deeper" dungeon in Sailen.

So plenty of MMORPG choices there, being an iPad gamer at the moment I think that O and C will be getting some more attention before I check out Vindictus' new update.

Is Castlot the new Lord of Ultima ?

Castlot : Not a lot to talk about

Castlot is by no means a bad game, it's even rather decent. There's just nothing really noteworthy to say about it, either as a positive or negative.

The art style is very reminiscent of other browser-based, free-to-play RTS games like Lord of Ultima. It paints the picture of a vaguely medieval, vaguely European landscape in rather drab tones.

The gameplay is, again, very similar to other games in this category : you build things to better your equipment so you can more easily defeat your AI and player-controlled opponents. One good point is that building and upgrading a location is lighting-fast, one of the main complaint I generally have against such games, which use this delay as an incentive to buy in-game cash.

The tutorial is a bit too light on actual explanation and a little too heavy on narrative texts : I still haven't parsed out how to finish one of my quests, but maybe I just dismiss one wall of text too swiftly. On the other hand, if you've played any of Castlot's predecessors, you'll find your way around the interface just fine.

Again, this is not a bad game, It just doesn't seem to bring new to the table.
