The future of Smartphone Technology

A friend recently went to a psychics stage show, so I thought I would get an amusing app to entertain her. Ghost scanner came to mind, whilst it’s extremely doubtful if it works, it does give some food for thought. Not about the nature of the supernatural, but what else we could actually be doing with our phones. Ghost scanner claims to detect ghosts using the different sensors on our phones. Well what capabilities does a phone actually have and what ingenious ideas could we use smartphone technology for? Gps, frequency detection across the gsm network, connectivity to the internet via 3g , proximity detection to stop phone turning off during calls, accelerometer, led lights for camera, the camera itself, microphone and possibly some others. Thats a lot of capabilities, creatively perhaps pretending to find the supernatural shouldn’t be the pinnacle of what our phone can do.Smartphone technology has come a long way since the days of monochromatic screens all the power is there but just needs to be harnessed. So creatives youve got some powerful hardware, isn’t it time to actually start using it?

Free to Play (Cow Clicker and more)

What you would be prepared to pay for in free to pay title? In one of my previous postings I spoke about the different models that games use to make money.Increasingly common are micro transactions in games which make gamers pay for amongst other things, virtual goods. So the question is what gamers are prepared to pay for. Amusingly there is a spoof game which exists on facebook called Cow Clicker. Why I mention Cow Clicker is the fact that you can part real money to buy something quite meaningless. You can pay to get a patterned cow which is fair enough, but as part of his social comment the developer had made it so you can pay to get cows with miniscule differences to each other. For example one model faces left, the other which you will pay for, faces right. And yet still people pay! At one stage before it was banned sellers did a roaring trade on ebay selling virtual currency for online games. It is write common in MMORPG games for there to be a pay for virtual currency which can be used to purchase virtual goods. Swords, armour, clothing, the sale of virtual goods is booming. But where do you draw the line. Reading the forums it seems that it is not unusual for consumers to sometimes spend hundreds of pounds on virtual goods. Would you pay for a right facing cow?

Portable gaming achievements

Mobile gaming in general and app gaming specifically needs new and creative ways to keep their audience enthused. Traditional videogames are for the time rich and so can afford long drawn out story lines and scatter their rewards few and far between. App games because of their relatively short playing time ( there are exceptions of course , such as the brilliant RPG based Zenonia series) need to keep rewards coming thick and fast.
This post will highlight some of the techniques that some of the more succesful smartphone games have used to reward their players.
The first game we're going to talk about is the brilliant platformer   CJ: Strike Back by Droidhen . To even call it a platformer is doing it a disservice though as its actual genre is quite hard to define. The meat of the game takes place as the eponymous character runs up the sides of the screen and single presses of the screen are used to make him leap off the walls and take out enemies in mid air. If jumps are mistimed then he will run into obstacles or collide with enemies and fall to his death.

CJ in his Ironman form gained by killing three fireballs
The games graphics and music are of the high standard that we would expect from  Droidhen but what really got me thinking about how app gaming can draw in its audience is the constant sense of progression in the app and a inculcated desire to make achievements. In this type of game the need to get a high score is of course a driving factor, if you include the ability to compare your score to the rest of the world it is even better. But what really drove me on to keep playing the app was the small micro-rewards. The sense of achievement when the standard character takes out three enemies of a certain type and transforms into an unstoppable rocket for example. Then when I realised that for every type of enemy, of which I can think of at least five straight away , you get a different invunerable character the game attained an even better sense of fun. Finally to make the app even sweeter the developers saw fit to give the player small goals to aim for, such as attain 20,000 points or kill five of the same enemy in the same game. These achievements don't actually unlock anything but always keep you playing, adding to that sense of one more go as you try to get the achievement. A true masterclass in keeping app gaming fresh and unique for the player in a short time span.

Muffin Knight also deserves a very special mention of it's ability to keep the app gamer captivated. I've only played the free version which caps the player limit at level 20 and locks off the later levels. However given the preponderance of free games on the market I seldom pay for my app gaming fix, unless the game really stirs me. Muffin Knight does this, and I will shortly pay for it to unlock those later levels. How the game does this is masterful, aside from once again some very slick graphics and presentation the game throws a constant sense of progression at you. 15 Muffins to unlock a level? Well what gamer worth the title wouldn't make the effort to make sure he got those muffins.
Muffin Knight and its many unlockables
One of Muffin Knights nods to app gaming rewards is the fact that there are so many unlockable characters. You start off with a knight; gnome; archer and mage (all with different weapons and ways of engaging the enemy) and are soon unlocking rainbow pooping unicorns ; cyclops' and more. The need to keep on playing to gain the experience to unlock these beasties is a true nod to the developers skill at keeping an app gamer entertained in a relatively short space of time.

I could mention Angry Bird's Easter eggs and a whole host of other 'trick' developers use to keep their time poor smartphone audience entertained and rewarded enough to keep coming back again and again , but I'll just leave you with those two exposes for now and hope that if you're an app/mobile gamer you'll make the effort of searching out these top titles or other titles that press the risk/reward buttton as rapidly as they do.
I also hope that if you're an app developer reading this you'll make the effort of adding rewards and achievements as good as these into your apps, because us gamers do love them.

App Game Characters

I started writing this article in draft form many months ago , but only just recently a television advert of all things spurred me on to carry on writing it.
The whole premise of this article is that as videogaming has become an established hobby/occupation for many people there have always been associated icons. Mario stands out; the whole cast of Street Fighter; all the way back to the standout icons of Pacman and the venerable Space Invaders. Now that app gaming has come of age it follows that there should be a host of icons that we start to associate with this type of game. For now I'm just going to mention two- one briefly and the other in more depth. Angry Birds of course stand out due to their immense popularity and their particular personality.
The other icons I'll mention aren't yet as widely known but I believe they will be in the future. Harking back to that television advert I actually saw the stars in an Ipod Touch game over a year ago.
These two stars are Belly and the Brain, when I first downloaded the game I was struck by how perfectly the characters fit with the game type, firing food with different physical properties to feed the gluttonous belly. The game was just perfect with a great mix of puzzling and physics, but more importantly the characters were iconic and hilarious adding dramatically to my enjoyment. I even felt a little awestruck when the Just Eat advert came on television last week-almost a year from the day I'd met these icons and here they were in their own advert. So AngryBirds you aren't the only icons that app games have given us. Belly and the Brain are right up there too and I hope to add to this list as I encounter more lovable; fun iconic app gaming charatcers over the next few weeks.

Resetting an Android Phone

Sometimes a smartphone goes wrong and when it does the only thing to do is after every other solution has been tried, is to reset it.
Resetting an Android Phone can be done in two ways, firstly from the settings menu go to privacy settings. From there a factory data reset can be performed erasing all data and taking the phone back to its original out the box settings. A less dramatic option is to do a phone settings reset, where the settings will be reset but the phone will keep the users data.

If you are unable to perform any of these due to amongst other things a non working touchscreen , a few other options are available to reset an android handset.

On my Xperia Play I used the Sony Ericsson PC Companion to connect the phone to the PC and perform a reset. For other handsets such as HTC a similar PC connecting program can be used.
Android Physical Buttons-back button on left

Another hardware option that I've come across that didn't seem to work for me was to turn the phone off and then restart it while holding down the back button, apparently this should bring up a menu that can be used for a reset, but like I said that option didn't work for me. Apparently different Android phones can have different combinations , a manufacturer favourite also seems to be the power button and home button.

In a future post I'll cover some of the dangers of resetting an Android Handset.

Making money developing apps

The video game market while arguably an art form and culturally relevant of course is still primarily financially driven. With far over a billion downloads on both the App store and Android market the producers of games and apps are increasingly turning to new and creative ways to make money from their apps. The market for phone apps while burgeoning is still not as established as the traditional video game market for a number of reasons. Firstly apps have much more of a throw away value due to their lack of longevity. Secondly consumers are less likely to buy an app if there is a similar one of roughly the same quality for free. And of course the traditional bogeyman of the gaming industry, piracy, must also be taken into account. That is why when it comes to making money from apps publishers will not automatically charge for an app and might explore less traditional routes of generating capital.Google makes billions from advertising and many publishers are exploring ad supported games as a way of making money. The downside of this for them is of course that they will need to sell a vast number of apps to break even, and if course for the consumer the downside is the irritation of pop up ads. Other apps will be semi pay for with the user paying further on for more features and levels. Good for what you get but of course it can be painful if you are deep into a game and then need to pay to get further. Under the umbrella of Freemium games comes many different types. Many will work off micro transactions paying pittance for things such as new clothes for a gaming avatar, others will have content packs that need to be downloaded. For the publisher they will need a hard core audience engrossed enough in a game to want to pay for inane things. For a user unless you are paying for premium content you might feel cheated that you’re not getting all a game can offer. Of course despite there being many ways that you can splurge your cash on apps and games it must be pointed out that there is much free quality out there. And of course if you really have to pay for an app, just make sure that you turn to a service like Gametrender to help make your decisions!

Best Android Free Games

My Xperia Play recently needed to be reset , leaving me appless and gameless. Due to an upcoming business trip I was in a rush to download some of the best and free apps on the Android Market. In no particular order are these little gems , my only criteria are that they be free, the games span multiple genres and are all of the best quality that I could find at short notice.

Zenonia 3

Each of these games deserve a seperate review, and in future when time permits I'll pick the choicest to explore further- in the meantime if you're in a rush for some of the best free android games(some Xperia Play optimised) then you can't go far wrong.

Android Market Alternatives

There are lots of ways to get your app noticed and more importantly purchased. As the Android revolution continues the greatest strength also appears to be its greatest weakness. Whilst the Apple I Store is tightly regulated and controlled, Android gamers have a more open and free way to get their app gaming fix not just from the Android market. Because of this many industry players both small and large are rearing their heads and becoming involved. Of course the main access to apps is via the Android market. The next biggest player is Amazon who have a dedicated app, the Amazon App  store which unfortunately at the moment is USA only. Dig some more and one of the next names that come up is Getjar, famous for having many web exclusives such as Burn the Rope.Getjar now has a new type of Appstore called Getjar Gold, this appstore allows you to download quality pay for apps for free in because of linked up marketing deals. Any videogame industry needs their monoliths and EA games after making billions off of traditional games now also has a website to download Android games. Special mention also goes to Gameloft making substantial waves both on the market and their own website.Gameloft's app store can be accessed from the internet or from your device, the link from your phone is quite good as Gameloft's appstore will only display games optimised for your phone, indeed many of my best Xperia Play games have come from Gameloft. Dig deeper of course and many more app sources can be found. That is what makes Android gaming that little bit more difficult to access but also infinitely more rewarding.

Gameloft Refund Policy

Back in the day you’d go into a shop and physically choose your item. Hold it in your hand, weigh it consider the pros and cons and then buy it.The retail model applied to physical video games too and shops were if not happy about it, still obliged to accept your returns. Now that we’ve moved away from physically handling apps and games for our phones surely a more robust system should be in place for returns, especially if the games are defective. In subsequent posts we’ll look into the various methods currently employed, but this post will mainly concentrate on experiences with Gameloft customer services. Now regular readers will have noticed Gameloft coming up fairly frequently in posts. They do churn out a lot of entertaining games on a frequent basis. However it seems that sometimes quality control is lacking and buggy versions get released. Of particular note on my Xperia play is Modern Combat 2 , delving into the forums it appears that nobody can get the game to work on their Xperia Play! So despite having a version optimised for the so called premier gaming phone, it doesn’t even work. Of course from my tone you can tell that I was one of the ones caught out. Firstly it must be pointed our that I’ve discovered two ways to pay for their games. Paypal transactions, which I’ve used and phone billing, I personally prefer the Paypal transactions as they give you a receipt number as proof of purchases if something goes wrong. It seems that to seek help it’s necessary to email Gameloft who, eventually, get back to you with a solution Which invariably seems to be a link to an alternative game.Although I suppose a refund would have been forthcoming if I had asked. All in all the process is straightforward but I have to point out some caveats: firstly the average resolution time takes about a week. Also disappointingly their website doesn’t seem to keep track of purchases very well, with none of my numerous purchases showing up resulting in Gameloft having to track down the purchases. Also even though all problems have been eventually resolved I would prefer if the problems didn’t exist in the first place and bugs were eliminated in the first place.

App Gaming the Future?

Recent comments by the SCEA president are quite thought provoking. In a speech app gaming was likened to home made camcorder created home movies and not seen as a real threat to blockbuster games of the moment. He goes on to say that smartphone gaming could even help the blockbusters by getting non gamers involved in games. While on one level I agree with him-in an ideal world if we were all single and loved in bachelor/bachelorette pads with massive screen hd tvs and trust funds to ensure us a life of leisure then possibly app gaming might be slightly less relevant. However, this is not the case, we live in the real world of families; mortgages and jobs. As the average age of gamers increases so do our responsibilities, and that is why the quick fix of app based gaming is slowly taking over from traditional gaming. Shared Tv -not a problem-I’ll play  games on my phone, late at night not wanting to disturb the rest of the house:on my phone, no time to set up Tv and console: play games on phone.Travelling the world on prolonged business trips: phone. As for the fact that smartphone apps aren’t  AAA titles nor blockbusters-that’s true-but for sheer volume there are going to be some mega successes -possibly pound for pound more than traditional gaming. So do you prefer gaming on your smartphone, are Xperia Play games better than consoles, is playing games on your IPhone more rewarding than traditional videogames? Is it the future? Debate.
Jack Tretton-Scea President shares unfounded Smartphone opinion.

Freemium games :Not quite free

The English language is amazingly adaptable with lots of new words being added every year. Well one of particular interest to gamers which I’m sure we will be seeing in a dictionary soon is Freemium. Freemium Games On Android and iPhone are becoming the norm.Do you see what they’ve done there? Free and Premium surely two good things. This is an increasingly popular business model that app developers are turning to to generate cash. In app purchase and Gameloft's cunning videogame marketing strategy of calling their app free plus games are other ways we've seen of this game genre being referred to.
Rather than having in app adverts to help pay for their games (more on that in another article) app  developers will charge for extra features such as specialized items, new levels and extra game modes. There's lots of variation that developers can put on this theme and so far its proving quite effective with recent hit freemium games for Android, such as Robotek, generating capital this way.
Robotek: Freemium game or free plus app?
Robotek is a strategy game with the eventual aim of liberating all the world's “nodes” from evil androids. Every node you liberate gives you more energy but every time you lose, your energy is depleted. While possible to complete the game without paying it will be very, very difficult, so the freemium model lets you purchase energy with in app purchases.
It's this mobile phone revenue stream that allows what could easily be a purchased game be free for the casual gamer. When is it worth making purchases like these, well thats why you need to help get Gametrender up and running because thats our business-getting the best apps into the hands of gamers!
Some other top free games:
Gunbros goes Freemium
Excellent multidirectional shooter taking on the legacy of past arcade games such as Smash TV , GunBros is a lot of fun with or without in -app weapon and upgrade purchases.
Gt Motor Racing from Gameloft
Really Gameloft are you actually fooling anybody by calling your Freemium racing game a free plus game? Nevertheless GT Racing:Motor Academy Free+ is another excellent car racer with some good licensed vehicles from Gameloft.

The Sims Freeplay

Just released and storming up the iPhone and iPad charts is the latest Sims offering: Sims Freeplay . The Sims have always been popular on mobile phones with brilliant outings in games such as The Sims 3 and it's only natural that the virtual avatar sim is taken to the next financial level with a freemium version of the Sims. (Note EA's clever branding of the app as Freeplay). This EA app is available online only for the moment (ie. your phone must be connected to the internet to play) Now you can have the pleasure of spending real money to get simoleons (Sims currency) to make your levelling up in the game faster.

So Freemium, freeplus or Freeplay call it what you will but this seems to be the en vogue way to make money through apps at this time. Let us know what you think are some of the best and worst Freemium games out for Android and Apple.

Android market facing competition?

One of the marvels of using an Android phone is its ability to be customized and used in anyway we see fit. What this means for a gamer is the ability to get games from virtually any source. As opposed to itunes being the only source for Iphone apps
There is access to multiple game sources for Android Phones and that is expanding all the time. The traditional route for getting apps is of course the Android market, another biggy is the Amazon apps store which is currently Usa only but supposedly the Amazon Appstore will be in Europe in the near future. The game developer “Gameloft” lets us download smartphone games straight from their store, “Getjar” is another source of apps and expect EA’s Origin to be a big alternate market for app downloads in the future too. With a little bit of know how though any apk file which is in the Android format can be installed on your phone. So lots of choice out there, remember Gametrender will help you with those difficult choices you just need to ask

Tower Defence :Smartphone App genres 2

In a previous posting we explored  the endless running genre. Now a few weeks on we turn to another
Staple in the AppGamer's diet: Tower Defence.
The premise is again a simple one: there is a set route that an enemy will travel down and your base. You lay various defences along the route to take out the attackers, if they make it as far as your base it's game over. Simple!
Historically originating as internet browser based games it wasn't long before developers realised that the genre would convert very well to the smartphone based platforms. Gameplay can be slow and methodical or thick and fast. Within the simple premise there is lots of scope for strategic play, with different unit types, slow, heavy firers  or fast, quick firers amongst others. A lot of creativity can go into this type of game with different time periods or themes predominating . Some good current examples are Handygames wild west scenario, Guns and Glory and it's WW 2 based sequel Guns and Glory WW2. The cute graphics and chirpy soundtrack bely the fact that the game(and indeed genre) can be deeply strategic. A Machine Gunner to take on a squad of infantryman: Simple. But what about micromanaging  three rifleman; two tanks and a grenadier when thirty different enemies ranging from dismounted infantry to heavily armoured fighting vehicles are about to descend down upon you en-masse all following different routes across varying camoflauged and or covered terrain-not so simple then is it!
That's why we love Tower Defence Games.

Android Developers Conferencing

It would be negligent of me not to pass on an Android Development opportunity like this: http://www.svandroid.org/

At the moment the group is about 4000 strong and predominantly American based, they have been around for about a year organising monthly and sometimes more frequent meet ups and bootcamps to improve the skills of the development community and to bring on our Droid in leaps and bounds.

The next conference will be the AppdevBootcamp/AppPlanetChina Conference , join the group now to learn more. Keep up the good work fellow Android enthusiasts.

Stardoll : Facebook game Sensation- a nine year old's perspective

Something different from Gametrender: I've recruited a nine year old to write a blog post as she was so enthusiastic about the Facebook game Stardoll. As to this posts relevance: Some interesting information for games aimed at the sub-teen market. It's all in her own words so will hopefully give developers some useful marketing and monetisation information if they are aimed at this market. So over to our nine year old guest writer:

When you first sign up you will get a suit, you get to decorate it however you like! You get star coins and star dollars, you only use star dollars when you are a superstar.A superstar is just like being a member it maybe costs you but it is totally worth it .You can get a lot more because you can use the star dollars .If you are not a super star do not worry, one day for 24 hours only you can be a Superstar and do what ever you want and buy with star dollars !When you press shop at the Top Bar you will suddenly with a blink of an eye you see some categories with fashion, decorate and beauty but while you are  looking at the categories  you will see the latest clothing right next to them and you could get some ideas. When you are in your suit at the top bar you will see a line  saying beauty parlour and you can do make up,body, hair ,hands, face and feet. You can do all sorts in there.Plus you can change the clothes you bought and you can change your clothes everyday if you want to!And it is totally free unless you want to be a member of course. But it does not make a difference since you have to do that on every game if you want to be a member or as they call it on Stardoll a Superstar! On the top bar if you press catwalk you will get to rate other peoples outfits, also you can rate other peoples suit!

Fixing an Xperia Play Smartphone

On 10 October I awoke in  the morning to a grisly find. An Xperia Play that had frozen.
The Android Phone in the 6 months that I have had it has become indispensable. I use the Android Blogspot App to blog from (and occasionally the Wordpress App), the Jorte app organises my life and Thinking Space gets all my ideas down so I can revisit them and work them into something else later. That's of course not to mention all the Android games downloaded from the market (Battleheart; Zenonia 1,2,3 and more) that I use for entertainment. So a potentially broken phone is a major irritation at the best and a serious disability at the worst.
Hopefully in this post I'll be able to impart some knowledge and resources that helped me to fix the broken phone before I had to send it back to Vodafone.

My first indication was when the alarm went off at 6 (some Katy Perry song, Big Headed Alien or some such) normally I'm quite good at quickly waking up and turning off the Phone's alarm, but this morning I though that I'd hit the wrong button as the alarm kept on going off, and thanks to the latest Uk firmware update that boosts the speaker volume the entire house was soon awake!

Going downstairs later I found that the touchscreen was unresponsive. It does sometimes happen so I was unpanicked , the normal solution is to turn the phone off, which if the touchscreen is not working can only be done by removing the xperia's battery. This done , most web sources say to leave the battery out for between 15 to 30 seconds. I did this , but this time the phone even failed to turn on! Now panic and desperation was starting to set in. Despite this casualty life still had to go on , so leaving the ,possibly, broken phone in my pocket I set off to work, hoping that the Android os would sort itself out.

Arriving at work the phone was still showing what I refer to as the grey screen of death- the Sony Ericsson logo comes up in grey but nothing further happens.

The next idea was to leave the battery out for a longer period of time, this time I left it out for over half an hour. On turning the phone on nothing had changed.

Returning home for a short tea break I decided to put the phone on charge , in the hope that this would jolt it alive. Removing the battery and turning it on seemed to get some sort of result as the phone actually managed to turn on, but still the touchscreen unresponsive problem remained.

I then left the phone on charge for a couple of hours whilst I returned to work. the next step I knew would be to consult the internet for Android Help Forums and Xperia Play Help sites.

Lunchtime came and went with no progress, I did learn though that a further solution would be to take the battery out as well as the sim card and memory card and reinsert them after the obligatory 30 seconds. however this too failed to produce results.

In the evening after work I turned to the internet to research more deeply what steps I could take to fix the android phone. The symptoms so far were an unresponsive touchscreen coupled with a failure to turn on unless connected to a charger. Looking on the Sony forums the touchscreen problem does seem to crop up, but as for the not turning on unless a charger is connected it seemed to suggest a battery problem. At one stage , very briefly I was elated as the touchscreen started working again for all of five minutes. But then became unresponsive again. I of course cleaned the screen properly but this had no effect.

I then started up the Sony Ericsson Pc Companion to reload the firmware. however the catch was that even though the PC could pick up the phone , without the ability to tell the phone to connect I was getting nowhere. Rebooting seemed to be the only solution, but the only way to reboot an Xperia Play with a frozen screen was by going on to a Sony site that would do a hard reset. The other solution  would involve doing a reset from the phone itself-but this would mean that i would need a working touchscreen , which I didnt have.
After about half an hour I had redownloaded the firmware and got it onto the phone via the USB cable(no interaction on the handset was needed for this solution)
And the hard reset worked.... for all of five minutes until the touchscreen became unresponsive again! I even cleaned the whole phone in desperation as the touchscreen can lock if the proximity sensor is dirty, even this lateral solution didn't work.
Finally I decided that the phone was beyond repair and phoned Vodafone Customer Services who sent me a prepay envelope and said a repair would take up to seven working days.

Waiting for the return envelope to arrive I took the battery out and the simcard was put into a younger family member's HTC Wildfire( and that experience is a blog in itself!).

The envelope arrived today and I tried the phone again( you never know!) and guess what? The Xperia Play is working again!(so far let's hope it carries on !)

Miracle Android Handset Cure: By any means possible!
So what finally fixed it, the phone was undamaged, but the only possible solution I can think of is that perhaps some moisture got into it and by leaving the battery off and the innards exposed for a long period of time got the handset working again, Hopefuly the problem is now resolved, and I've learnt some valuable Android lesson which I'll share in other blogposts. I also hope that this post gives you some idea how to fix an Xperia Play phone, or fix any other Android phone. Now let's get gaming!

Is the Iphone 4s any good?

Voice recognition software for iPhone 4s find my friends and dual core chips claimed seven times faster graphics , all buzz words surrounding the Iphone 4sThe iPhone 5 has disappointingly not yet arrived but what's been served up in it's place, while not quite a main course, seems to at least be the tech equivalent of a shared platter starter .
And shared does seem to be the operative word for the recently announced iPhone 4S. Significantly the processing chip is said to be the equivalent of the IPads , boasting a dual core and perhaps optimistically claiming that graphics will be up to seven times faster.
As for bundled software the Find My Friends app sounds quite exciting, offering a service that pinpoints friends and family, significantly for tracking the children the app can be locked.
Finally, Siri the voice activated  personal assistant that we wrote about in a previous post, if it works, will be phenomenal.
Will these significant features be enough to ease buyers hunger for the increasingly mythical iPhone 5?

IPhone 4S non contender?

Why a screen that's only 3.5 inches, why a processor that's only at a speed of 1GHz. Are these issues that need to be addressed or is it all part of Apples financial plan?
Yes, the phone will be sexy with some great features as mentioned in my previous post, but the fact that so many Android phones such as the HTC Sensation XE have superior specs is cause for concern.
Admittedly the 4S is sexy, but of course it is, it's almost identical to the iPhone 4. The os will of course be good and add the aforementioned voice features but so what; it's nothing that's not been done before.
As Apple's deceased leader becomes a fading and revered memory has the Smartphone company already started to lose its direction, or cynically is the 4S just a temporary stopgap designed to make current owners fork out for very little more and drive down prices for current handsets to reel in more devotees?

Angry Birds Comic-Where worlds collide

Increasingly in the gaming universe different forms of art are becoming inspiration for others.Just as in the realm of movies there is starting to be a trend amongst videogames for cross pollination.
I went searching across the net as I'd recently heard about a dark graphic novel based upon, of all things, the smartphone app Angry Birds.
I'm still searching for the comic as I write but the more I dig the more I come up with some strange and crazy stuff. MTV has jumped on the band wagon and come up with this twisted imagining of what the eponymous birds would look like if they were Superheroes. Some crazed imaginings there, but looking further this is what else I found...

Fan pieces of the birds litter the web,one wonders if they have even played the app, and there are so many reimaginings of them:
The pop culture phenomenon grows and is flourishing by feeding off of other more established cartoons.
Finally in my searching I found the dark and twisted comic.Which it turns out is actually a motion  comic. An interesting piece of videogame lore as it of course blends popular game icons with graphic novel awesomeness, adds a hefty measure of creativity and sends an established medium in a new direction.
Comic link.

Gametrender: Expanding the Android market in China and beyond

Apps for autism

Many thanks to Android Apps for their valuable article on Android apps for autistic children. The article and corresponding apps show just what a valuable tool smartphones are becoming for all walks of life.Apps For Autistic Children

Smartphone Gamers on the rise.

Recent studies quoted on industry favourite website Gamasutra confirm Gametrenders speculations that smartphone gaming is becoming ever more popular. Of thirty thousand people interviewed it appears that almost thirty percent are now using their phones for gaming.
An increase of 1.6 percent from previous studies.
Personally I have a myriad of reasons to game on my phone, not least a time poor lifestyle involving lots of travelling. Modern day time poverty and the rise of mobile phones as a legitimate gaming platform seem to be going hand in hand.  Helped enormously of course by phones increasing processing power. How long we wonder before smartphone gaming becomes the defacto standard, not from necessity but from choice? Find Gamasutras quoted article here.

What is Siri?

Disappointingly no word yet on the iPhone 5 but what we do have is new, and possibly innovative software on the newly announced iPhone 4S.
Siri is the new voice activated and enabled personal assistant that the 4S sports. It promises a lot with dictation, voice reminders and app activation by voice all promised. Voice control is nothing new for mobiles but if Siri delivers it promises to innovate by using all of the iPhone 4S built in apps. Voice activation of memos, location based services, reminders and more sounds very sweet, and it is promised that all this will be functioned by the use of our normal voices. Accuracy is always the concern for these types of things so we wait with bated breath for actual user reports. Read more about Siri here.

Location Based Game: Agent Artemis

We're always very excited about innovations in the mobile world. It gives us a warm fuzzy feeling whenever we see something coming out that could only work with a smartphone.
That's why we're so excited about the imminent release of a new location based spy game called Agent Artemis. Details are very scarce at the moment but what little we do know suggests that the game will use your real world location and perhaps even local businesses in some fashion. Is it just me that's excited about adult hide and seek? I'm guessing not so let's see what this smartphone specific genre has to offer when Agent is released.
We'll keep you updated and promise more in detail posts about other types of location based games soon.
Now read from Droidgamers on Agent Artemis.

Android Market Changes

It's a sad fact that in spending the time running my website and researching for new smartphone articles that I sometimes miss the important things going on in the wider Android world.
Recently the layout of the Android market has changed and it has arguably a better, slicker interface with new features that should make downloading apps a whole lot easier and make the apps easy to find. But something is missing and it could have massive repercussions. Where is the 'Just in' section from previous versions of the Android market?
Without this fifteen minutes of fame bit for developers, smaller players are going to miss out on even this little bit of exposure that they did have.
On a personal level I enjoyed trawling through the market to find apps that I wouldn't normally see. I've even used this feature for work, allowing me to find new, smaller  app developers and contact them to offer my app marketing or translation services.
As an app user we should campaign for the just in section to return. As things are small app developers are massively disadvantaged, as only larger developers can expect to get the exposure needed to sell apps.
Fellow website Droid gamers also laments this regrettable state of affairs. So please Google , help the Android underdogs!

Getjar Gold Success

The Android Market is a superb must have for all android users and the best place android apps, bar none. Or is it?
Recent months have seen some staunch rivals emerge, firstly USA and then the UK for a few brief hours had access to the Amazon app store (rumor has it that the UK release was premature with the release being unscheduled and then hastily withdrawn when the mistake was noticed). There are numerous other smaller app stores out there (my own included which is still in development: gametrender appstore)
But for free apps at the moment one giant is beginning to dominate. Getjar Gold.
As a spin off from the site Getjar, it is enjoying phenomenal success. Recent news has it that they have just passed the one million dollars worth of free apps downloaded benchmark. These are quality apps too , with a recent article from Pocket Gamer listing five of Getjars apps in a top ten free apps list.
I'm of course on the Getjar mailing list and a recent email to their followers highlights their success and lauds the business model which allows them to give away quality apps and earn money by giving their advertisers a huge market. So it's a win win situation for everybody. Free up space on your phone now and start downloading free quality Android apps.
